On the Midwinter Day that is his eleventh birthday, Will Stanton discovers a special gift: he is the last of the Old Ones, immortals dedicated to keeping the world from domination by the forces of evil, the Dark. At once, he is plunged into a quest for the six magical Signs that will one day aid the Old Ones in the final battle between the Dark and the Light. And for the twelve days of Christmas, while the Dark is rising, life for Will is full of wonder, terror, and delight.

What disappointed you about The Dark Is Rising?

I loved the first book in the sequence, but this second book is a completely different genre. Frankly, I wouldn’t have guessed that it was written by the same author. It has far too many just-so scenarios, and too much lying by the main character. I have no idea why this book won the Newbery Honor.

Would you ever listen to anything by Susan Cooper again?

    No, I don't think I will.

What does Alex Jennings bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As with the first book, Alex Jennings does an excellent job. Too bad the story itself wasn’t worth his talents.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment. Not disgust, but almost.
