The year is 1859 and Hero Hollis, beautiful and headstrong niece of the American consul, arrives in Zanzibar. It is an earthly paradise; it is also the last outpost of the Slave Trade. A passionate opponent of slavery, Hero is swept into a turmoil of royal intrigue, abduction, piracy, smuggling, and a virulent cholera epidemic. There in Zanzibar, the most cruelly beautiful island of the Southern Seas, she must choose her love and unravel her destiny.

This novel was all promise and no real delivery. It could have been so much more and it never quite got there. I was very disappointed as I loved M.M. Kaye's, Far Pavilions. This was nowhere close to that novel.
The narrator was horrible when she did the American accents. She would have been better off not doing the accent since it really made listening to an already boring story even more annoying. It truly was detracting! The main Character Hero was probably the stupidest heroine I have ever run across. One after another stupid acts all the way to the dull ending of a rather dull story .All of the ingredients were there but the author never developed any if it. I wouldn't recommend wasting your time on this one.

One evening, Danny, an East End cockney who works as a garage mechanic, takes his girlfriend up to the West End to celebrate their engagement. He crosses the path of Spencer Craig, a West End barrister tipped to be the youngest Queen's Counsel of his generation. A few hours later Danny is arrested for murder and later is sentenced to 22 years in prison.

I really enjoyed this audio. I do not think you would be disappointed with this audio book. It is well presented and the story flows easily.
