Dolphin Smoote is the leader of the "Surf Dawgs", a group of young, ultra-cool Southern California surfers who observe the True Surfers' Code. The code, which dates from the heyday of 60s surf culture, dictates that whether they are riding waves, chasing girls, or facing other challenges, they have to be both "casual" and "radical". Dolphin is smitten with the new girl from out of town and longs to impress her, but acquiring a job would interfere with his casual, radical lifestyle.

This book is a real hoot. It's one of those books that you don't want to stop listening to. I am not from SoCal but have vacationed down there. I don't know if this is how it is down there for the Locals, but if it isn't, it should be. Like the hero, Dolphin Smoote, the rest of the characters and the whole story exhibit the qualities they value most -- being amazingly radical but extremely casual at the same time.

The story is a little like a PG Wodehouse story, but instead of upper class flakey Gentlemen Bums, its characters are upper middle class Beach Bums. Indeed, the name of one of the characters is 'Bertram'. The plot has some great twists and the ending is awesome. The tall tale about the surfing legend JJ Moon had me howling. If you've never heard about JJ, the book is worth getting just for that.

But for me the best thing of all was just the delightful verbal wit that the author keeps on displaying throughout. I highly recommend the book. I hope he comes out with the next in the series soon.
