"A nice read"
I really enjoyed listening to this book. In some ways, it reminded me of "To Kill a Mockingbird", in the sense that it is told from the viewpoint of a young girl on the verge of adulthood. The book was read in a very soothing tone that also added to the feel of a story set in the 1940's. Not a masterpiece, certainly, but a good story with a little bit of history thrown in.
"Such drivel"
A review posted by another reader led to my purchase of this audiobook. If I were an eight year old child, I may have enjoyed reading about a dog who is reincarnated twice (?!) This is a children's book - make no mistake.
"The missed notation"
Somehow, (I can't believe I missed it) the fact that this audio book runs almost 28 hours in length was not something I noticed when I purchased the book. As I always try to start what I finish, I did listen all the way to the end. It took almost 4+ hours for me to really be interested, and then the ending felt almost rushed - given that so much time and detail was spent on the earlier parts of the book. So, if you have 28 hours... be my guest.
"Well...."
Listening to this book reminded me of why I stopped watching "Thirty Rock" - parts were really funny, others were just plain weird. Don't get me wrong - I love Tine Fey. It's just that some of her anecdotes are, to be honest, dumb. There are some funny parts, (I think the second half of the book is much better than the first), but her mind just goes places that mine does not!
"Needs mending"
I know that from a politically correct standpoint, I should praise this Holocaust survival memoir. It just isn't as good as others I have read, so for me it was just OK. The author's notes at the end were actually the most interesting part of the whole book.
"I loved it"
This was a light hearted, funny book that I really enjoyed. The narrator must do stand up herself, because her comedic timing was spot on. And Audible, if you're reading this - I would like to somehow mark this author - so when she writes more, I will remember how much I enjoyed this book. (Just a suggestion!)
"One helluva meal!"
I had heard about this book but was a little hesitant since it was translated from another language; I wondered if anything would be "lost in translation". Not at all. It's a different, (and a bit disturbing) look at just how far parents will go these days to protect their children. The book rambles a bit in the middle, but overall it is well written. And Clive Mantle NAILS it as the narrator - he is a 10!
"Read this now"
If you have an interest in health and how food plays such a part in your overall wellness, then I would recommend this book. It's along the lines of others such as "Fast Food Nation", "Supersize Me", and Michael Pollan's books. I found it enlightening, but you have to be interested in the topic; alot of my friends and family prefer to be left in the dark when it comes to the food they prefer.
"My first with this author"
I liked the book, more for the parts involving the dog than the cop. Decent narration, too.
"Quite a read"
I grew up as a shy child, and remain a somwhat introverted adult. This book has some amazing insights, and I wish more people would take an opportunity to give it a listen. I really enjoyed it.
"Big dud"
I always try to finish what I start; I've suffered through many books that were just OK. After eight (yes eight) hours with this, I had to give up. It is just so dull that I just couldn't bear the thought of another seventeen (yes, seventeen) hours more. Audible, if you are reading this, how about a "mercy credit" for effort?
