Scientology, created in 1954 by a prolific sci-fi writer named L. Ron Hubbard, claims to be the world's fastest-growing religion, with millions of members around the world and huge financial holdings. Its celebrity believers keep its profile high, and its teams of "volunteer ministers" offer aid at disaster sites such as Haiti and the World Trade Center. But Scientology is also a notably closed faith, harassing journalists and others through litigation and intimidation, even infiltrating the highest levels of government to further its goals.

Would you listen to Inside Scientology again? Why?

Yes I would! It's such an unbelievable journey into something I knew little about and I was appalled by the methods they use to brainwash people.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The brainwashing methodology. Breaking people down and preying on their vulnerabilities!

What does Stephen Hoye bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A voice that I found easy to listen to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The death of the young girl Lisa.

    Any additional comments?

I feel grateful that books like this are written so that people like me can be made aware of traps like this that are out there.

Barbara Demick's Nothing to Envy follows the lives of six North Koreans over fifteen years - a chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung and the unchallenged rise to power of his son, Kim Jong-il, and the devastation of a far-ranging famine that killed one-fifth of the population. Taking us into a landscape never before seen, Demick brings to life what it means to be an average Korean citizen, living under the most repressive totalitarian regime today.

What made the experience of listening to Nothing to Envy the most enjoyable?

Barbara Demick wrote it in such a way that you really felt like you were right there with the individual's she wrote about. I was so engaged with each person's story.

What other book might you compare Nothing to Envy to and why?

    I've never ready anything comparable.

What about Karen White???s performance did you like?

Kept me very engaged with the different characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely!

    Any additional comments?

I learned so much about North Korea that I didn't know before. Some of it was extremely realistic making me realize just what a difficult life these people have endured and continue to endure. Made me very thankful for my life in Canada!
