In a groundbreaking work based on hundreds of interviews, including with President Obama, and a trove of letters, journals, and other documents, one of our pre-eminent journalists presents a richly textured account of Barack Obama and the forces that shaped him. This book begins in Kansas and Kenya, decades before Obama was born, and ends as he prepares for a political life. The listener gains a deeper insight into the first black president of the United States, revealing as never before the arc of his history.

Theirs was the most captivating American political partnership since Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger: a bold and untested president and his seasoned, relentless vice president. Confronted by one crisis after another, they struggled to protect the country, remake the world, and define their own relationship along the way. In Days of Fire, Peter Baker chronicles the history of the most consequential presidency in modern times through the prism of its two most compelling characters, capturing the elusive and shifting alliance of George Walker Bush and Richard Bruce Cheney as no historian has done before.

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Book is pretty entertaining, it's a bit dated and he simplifies some of the science too much.

The American military is a tightly sealed community, and few outsiders have reason to know that a great many senior officers view the Iraq war with incredulity and dismay. But many officers have shared their anger with renowned military reporter Thomas E. Ricks, and in Fiasco, Ricks combines these astonishing on-the-record military accounts with his own extraordinary on-the-ground reportage to create a spellbinding account of an epic disaster.

Would you consider the audio edition of Fiasco to be better than the print version?

I was pleasantly surprised this book was written very objectively. Unlike some historians, he doesn't list too many boring details and he explains the principal characters.

If you could give Fiasco a new subtitle, what would it be?

The perfect storm of F* ups.

    Any additional comments?

If you want to understand how the war got started, this is a great book. The author does a great job of explaining what motivated Bush and his team, and how they fell into many mistakes. If you're looking for a hate Bush book, this is not for you, this book is factual.

Philosopher, Broadway headliner, fighter, felon - Mike Tyson has defied stereotypes, expectations, and a lot of conventional wisdom during his three decades in the public eye. Bullied as a boy in the toughest, poorest neighborhood in Brooklyn, Tyson grew up to become one of the most thrilling and ferocious boxers of all time - and the youngest heavyweight champion ever. But his brilliance in the ring was often compromised by reckless behavior.

I don't know how accurate Mikes side of the story is, but his life story is very entertaining.

What does Joshua Henry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator sounds like Mike Tyson without the lisp. After a few chapters you're convinced it's Mike talking to you. I think he must have worked with Mike because he totally nailed the emotional emphasis and just the right times.

    Any additional comments?

This is a must listen to anyone who followed iron Mikes career. I think almost everyone would enjoy the stories he tells.

  • Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong

The definitive account of Lance Armstrong's spectacular rise and fall. In June 2013, when Lance Armstrong fled his palatial home in Texas, downsizing in the face of multimillion-dollar lawsuits, Juliet Macur was there - talking to his girlfriend and children and listening to Armstrong's version of the truth. She was one of the few media members aside from Oprah Winfrey to be granted extended one-on-one access to the most famous pariah in sports. At the center of Cycle of Lies is Armstrong himself, revealed through face-to-face interviews.

    Melinda says: "...Pants on Fire"

    Story
What would have made Cycle of Lies better?

Worst narration ever. 95% of the characters are male, so why pick a female? (I'm guessing because the author is female, and she narrates the first part.).

What was most disappointing about Juliet Macur’s story?

The book only attacks Lance. Lance actually didn't cheat, every other team was doping. Her thesis is "anyone could have won with doping". Lance is a remarkable athlete (who is probably the ass she points out), but she never develops any stories about the amazing things he's done. The book is just 3rd party accounts of how Lance is an asshole and a big cheat.

Would you be willing to try another one of Carrington MacDuffie’s performances?

She's awesome doing female voices, so yes, if the main characters were female.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I had a low opinion of LA until I read this book, now my low opinion is of the author who clearly doesn't understand the demands of tour riders.

    Any additional comments?

LA is not 100% bad as Juliet Macur asserts. If you want to hate LA, maybe this book is for you.

This powerful, action-packed memoir puts us in the middle of the legendary fighting force known as the Screaming Eagles. Along the way, Donald R. Burgett, just 19 years old at the time of the battle, vividly captures some of the most horrific action of World War II. From point-blank tank assaults to hand-to-hand combat, Private Burgett and his cold, hungry, and wounded fellow paratroopers stood against an overwhelming enemy force - and won the battle that secured victory for the Allies in World War II.

This is the story of the rise to national power of a desperately poor young man from the Texas Hill Country. The Path to Power reveals in extraordinary detail the genesis of the almost superhuman drive, energy, and ambition that set LBJ apart. It follows him from the Hill Country to New Deal Washington, from his boyhood through the years of the Depression to his debut as Congressman, his heartbreaking defeat in his first race for the Senate, and his attainment, nonetheless, at age 31, of the national power for which he hungered.

Would you listen to The Path to Power again? Why?

I'm a historical junkie and this is one of the best books ever written. It's very entertaining and full of the right detail of information. Too many history books are written for academics and are very boring. I disagree with LBJs politics, but this book is fascinating, the left and the right should find this a must read.

Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking. Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains....
