Murderers, mob bosses, and convicts . . . these guys are not your average neighbors. Unless you live on Alcatraz. It's 1935 and 12-year-old Moose Flanagan and his family have just moved to the infamous island that's home to criminals like notorious escapee Roy Gardner, Machine Gun Kelly, and of course, Al Capone. Now Moose has to try to fit in at his new school, avoid getting caught up in one of the warden's daughter's countless plots, and keep an eye on his sister Natalie, who's not like other kids.

When I first saw the title of this book, I assumed it was going to be funny or quirky. However, this book was more on the serious side. I still enjoyed it a lot! This is more of a coming of age novel than a humorous book. I love the way that they portrayed his sister's Autism and how realistic they were with the way it was viewed in that time period.
Reading this book has peeked my interest in the history of Alcatraz. Even though I knew that kids lived on the island, I never thought about their every day lives there.
The narrator is great! He brings the characters to life with the voices he uses. I definitely recommend this book.

When Alice was 10, Ray took her away from her family, her friends - her life. She learned to give up all power, to endure pain. She waited for the nightmare to be over. Now Alice is 15 and Ray still has her, but he speaks more and more of her death. He does not know it is what she longs for. She does not know he has something more terrifying than death in mind for her. This is Alice's story. It is one you have never heard, and one you will never, ever forget.

This book was recommended to me by my Library Materials professor. She warned the class that it was hard to handle, but very good. It was a good book, but not as good as she made it seem.
The thing I liked about this book was the point of view. To be able to hear the thoughts of an abducted child is interesting. It changd my view of how I view kidnapping situations. The fear and anger that the child felt was well portrayed in the book.
I wouldn't recommend this book to children, although my teacher said it was children's literature, unless the child was a mature, older student who can handle dark, realistic stories.
