If you're a fan of melodrama or soap operas, you'll probably like this. I like neither and could only stomach one chapter.

Worth listening to just to hear how someone erudite and thoughtful makes sense of his world. If you were a fan of the dumb book, The Secret, you won't enjoy this one because not only is the author intelligent, he's also clear-sighted and rational in his views.

Be warned, it's more information-dense than it appears, plus his reading pace is a bit fast for my taste, so you may choose to listen to this book twice.

A North Korean ICBM crashes into the Sea of Japan. A veteran CIA officer is murdered in Ho Chi Minh City, and a package of forged documents goes missing. The pieces are there, but assembling the puzzle will cost Jack Ryan, Jr., and his fellow Campus agents precious time. Time they don't have.

I enjoyed this one, as I've enjoyed all of Mark Greaney's work. However....Scott Brick. He's got a great voice, very clean, good breathing, he almost never misreads, his accents and voices are always very well done, with the exception of Australian accents. (In the decades I've lived in Australia, I've never, ever heard an accent that sounds like the accents of the Australian characters in various audiobooks. Please visit here to address that issue, all you audiobook performers).

But back to Mr. Brick. He tends to drop his voice at the end of a sentence, and between that and his pacing, his voice can lend a melodramatic effect where none should exist. It's more annoying in some books than others; in this one it did detract in parts. In something from the horror genre the effect would be brilliant; in an action book, not so much.

Otherwise it was a good book, well paced as is usual with Mr. Greaney, and with an engaging and interesting story, apart from the somewhat twee bit at the very end.

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Too much teen introspection and too little action for my taste. I skipped two thirds of the book and was still able to follow the plot.

The third novel in the Adrien English series finds the "ill-starred and bookish" mystery writer and bookseller battling demons - maybe literally. After bookstore clerk Angus flees following terrifying death threats, Adrien must contend with a mysterious Satanic cult, a hot and handsome university professor, and his on-again/off-again relationship with closeted LAPD Homicide Detective Jake Riordan. And oh yes, murder...

Although well written and performed, I found the main character far too self-satisified for my taste. I also did not expect such an explicit sex scene between the main character and his occasional lover, Jake, in what I initially thought was going to be a light mystery.

I should have read the reviews more carefully. I'm sure others will enjoy this somewhat self-consciously edgy novel, but it's not for me.

The number of positive reviews this book received, and the fact that it's read by Dick Hill, convinced me to select this one despite having little interest in novels about war.

This book is as much about the characters as the war. The story moves along nicely but when the book ended it was my interest in some of the characters that made me want to buy the next book.
