"stories well told, ideology a bit old..."
david sedaris said it best when he made the statement "we both hated ourselves." this book is a well written account of feelings of inferiority from many angles. whether it's because his parents appear to him as crude oil next to his greasy palmed great aunt with her den of dead safari animals and tacky chauffeured cadillac. whether it's because his ragtag embarrassment of a father (who I think was an IBM exec) has the nerve to ask a more popular kid's parents to reimburse him for dental damages. whether it's the tortured feelings of being gay in a southern hetero community. c'mon dave-- you're a respected/bestselling writer who is probably more critically and commercially "successful" than anyone who every grew up in raleigh. i feel your pain, but what's next?
