For years I have listened to audiobooks on my long comute and enjoy most of my selections. Only once or twice have I had a book so bad I couldn't finish it, or on the other hand , found one I wanted to immediately hear again. Chiefs was one of the latter. I have gone through the whole book twice and listened to several sections multiple times. The story has everything from tradgety to comedy in a history of the old South. The narration is splendid and makes you feel you are right there...the fly on the wall. I rarely write reviews but simply had to praise his book.

The book ended so abruptly and incomplete that I went back to be sure my iPod hadn't skipped. I feel like I wasted my time listening to it. Before reading the end, I had recommended it to friends, but now I'll have to call them back.

This new review format stinks. You are asked questions that change with the number of stars given. Seems very condescending . Why can' t the reviewer decide on what to comment ?

I usually like the time travel theme, but this one has not been able to get me interested. Rarely do I not finish listening to a book, but this will probably be one.

The story is boring , and I only finished it because I paid for it. The reader makes it even harder to listen because of his terrible attempt to speak with a southern or country accent. He sounds like a poor imitation of Johnny Cash.

This is my first Lippman listen, and as you other listeners know, if you pause for too long, you can easily lose the plot. This tale moves back and forth in time with few clues as to where you are. A reader can easily flip back a few pages to refresh his/her memory, but listeners will have a harder time. That said, it is well worth the effort. The characters stories at first seem very disconnected, but in the end they all come together in a believeable, but hard to predict ending. A very worthwhile , hard to put down book, especially if you're are familiar with Balimer.

I too bought the book because of the King name and was not disappointed. This is a real old fashioned ghost story that is hard to find today. Most authors, including, Mr. King, try to find novel plots never used before, but it's nice to read a good old scary tale.

Th first half of the book was exciting and held my interest. The narrator's accent was annoying but tolerable. The second half completely dropped the story line in favor of gratutious sex. The worst part was that almost all sentences used the word body, but Mr. Stechschulte could not seem to pronounce it. It seemed to be baaaaaahdy or bhhhaaady or some such varaiation which became extremely annoying , and I could not finish the book, which is a first for me.

If you're like me, you enjoy anything Stephen King writes. This is not as bad as some of the reviews would lead you to believe, but certainly it is not his best. I believe that in "On Writing" he mentions that he threw this in a drawer for some time before taking it out to finish. Perhaps it should have stayed in there.

Perhaps it is because Ender's Game is so superb that I am disappointed.I have listened to all the Ender stories, and enjoyed them to some degree, but none can rival the original. I could not put down Ender's game, but had difficulty finishing Children . The pace is slow with too little action, and the narration, especially "The Hive Queen" voice is very irritating. Don't waste your book credit on this

A wonderful story of a young woman coming of age in the South of the 60's. One tends to forget, or perhaps suppress memories of our racist past; and this should be required reading for our teenagers. On a lighter note, not being female, I found this to be an excellent introduction to the pubescent female psyche. The narration is excellent and the reader's voice fits the character of Lily perfectly. You will not want the story to end, and you will miss hearing her voice !
