It is 1939, Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings.

    Story
What did you like best about The Book Thief? What did you like least?

I loved the richness of the story and the depth of the heroine. It took me several chapters to decide if i was enjoying the story or not. It took some time for me to get used to the story being narrated by death, although in the end this was one of the things I liked most. I found the accordion music between chapters very irritating.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how it was narrated by death and how we saw his point of view.

What about Dennis Olsen’s performance did you like?

His voice was perfect for the voice of death.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Yes I would.
