Tall Ships and Nepoleonic battles are not my usual cup of tea but this book was a pleasure to listen to and has me hooked on the series.
The concept and characters are great and I immediately felt the connection that will keep me coming back for more. The narration was excellent as well.
Ms. Clare has developed a quite different and interesting paranormal universe nested within our own mundane one, which I enjoyed very much. At the same time she seemed to fall back on fairly standard plot devices and the requisite romantic triangle which gave the story a very predicable arc. So much so, that I started making bets with myself about how things would turn out...and won. Thanks largely to Jennifer Ehle's narration, which was both subtle enough not to feel the accents were contrived and distinctive enough that I knew who was speaking at all times, I was drawn into the world and enjoyed meeting the characters enough that I will definitely listen to the next books in the trilogy.
Having already read the first chapter on Jim Butcher's website, I have been anxiously awaiting this next installment of the Dresden Files audio. I literally wanted to weep listening to this sample - as the other's here, we can only hope that a 2nd version will be released with Marster's on the mic.
I too will be saving my credits for other audio books and will have to resort to reading the book so I can, at least, hear Marster's voices in my head.
On the plus side the content is very good, with excellent advice although numerous references to 12% returns clearly dated the material.
Too bad the narration was a cross between infomercial and the Oxyclean guy...extremely annoying and lowered the credibility of what he has to say.
This is the book that hooked me on SF/Fantasy, particulary that with a female protagonist, when I was a kid. I have never been without a copy in my library and revisit Friday, my old friend, at least once a year.
The previous audio version with a male narrator was ridiculous. This narrator gave Friday a whiney tone that was a bit irritating and didn't have a great range of character voices. None the less I do enjoy having an audio version of an old favorite.
