"Wanted to like it, but didn't"
Listening to this book was a little like walking through hip-deep water. It is well written, but so dense. I felt as though I were trying to enjoy it and get into it, but the story wouldn't meet me half way.
"A contemporary, edgy, uncozy-cozy mystery!"
Very good story, kept me very engaged, a little mom-teenager relationship, a little magical older woman stuff, some very dark characters, mysterious and just the right amount of suspense.
Interesting story from a century before woven through. The main character, who is a Church of England priest, is very contemporary and thoughtful and someone who I could relate too. I like her character.
I really liked the characters, the town, and the mystery. Good listen!
"Excellent book."
This is another interesting, well told historical novel by the excellent author, Philippa Gregory. Good story, wonderful narration.
The main character shows a independence and character.
"Cute!"
A very cute, light and entertaining listen.
All these "royal spyness" books are similar.
I have no idea because I haven't read any in print.
Moved me? No. These are not really very "moving" books, they're light entertainment. Sort of like watching a sitcom.
"I kept expecting it to get better..."
This is a useless question because readers of Audible reviews are going to listen to it or not listen to it.
Can't think of one.
None
No
This was fairly boring despite a good narrator. It had potential, but just didn't quite deliver on plot.
"Not as good as the first Max Tudor book"
The first Max Tudor book, A Wicked Autumn, was really captivating, interesting and had
interesting characters who were complex and developed. Max himself was somewhat introspective and also interesting. This book, the second, was superficial, has stereotypical characters who were not appealing and about whom this reader didn't care.
It is hard to believe this second book was written by the same author, they are that different in quality.
No, but it may make me hesitate to buy another by this author.
OK.
It was boring, and I lost interest.
Read the first one, Wicked Autumn, and give this one a pass.
"Didn't hold my interest"
This book started off well but got worse. It was tedious.
No. I didn't find it interesting and I didn't want to keep listening to it.
George Guidall is excellent, as always, but even he couldn't make this interesting.
Stop listening.
I am surprised by all the good reviews. Just goes to show you, you can't judge a book by its reviews.
"I missed Three Pines!"
I think a major ingredient of what makes Louise Penny's book so wonderful to read is the personalities of Three Pines. They are complex, and we know them. This book didn't have that going for it. I would recommend any of the earlier books before this one. I hope the next one, and yes, I will definitely read it, is back in Three Pines!
Gamache!
"Excellent, intelligent, interesting, a must read!"
Informative and well written.
Because the words are her own, she is able to read it in a very engaging way.
A must read!
"Appallingly bad!"
Probably not by this author, but the narrator, yes.
Probably not.
Possibly.
Hmmm, can't think of any.
This is so awful, it leaves me speechless.
"Too long"
The story was good but it could have been shorter. It would
have benefited from better editing.
