This book reinforced my interest. I have listened to almost all audible books regarding neuroscience, willpower, and psychology that audible has to offer; and this book blends all of them into a great action plan that I can quickly listen to, to refresh and motivate deliberate practice.
Yes, very much so. The author is concise, using understandable and real world examples to explain high level research results. Their is very little self-indulgent reflection by the author; as her attitude towards the subject matter is one of confidence, generosity, and hopefulness that the reader/listener will succeed. I believe she truly wants to help.
The performance seemed flawless. However, I listen to most books at 2x or 3x speed, so imperfections are less noticeable. Increased speed also tends to lessen my narrator irritation factor when it comes to voice preferences.
I admittedly was inclined to purchase her other book on this site, which is mentioned only twice at the very end of the recording. If you are only looking to use credits, I would suggest skipping this teaser and purchasing her other work: I am assuming it is a more thorough look at this subject matter. If you have a couple of bucks to spend, this audiobook is a great guide that can be revisited very quickly.
I loved Art's other title "Smart Thinking", but was a little reluctant to go in on this book. I have several other books on this topic and the reviews I read didn't imply that there would be much in the way of new information. I was wrong!
This book does a great job using simple and concrete language as a means to highlight the the process of habit disruption and formation. Further, he wraps this process around an easily remembered framework of "why" that doesn't get lost in the minutia of experimental data.
After reading this book, I was struck with the notion that Mr. Markman also has the ability to adapt his writing style to incorporate the principles he teaches. Said another way, Mr. Markman has turned me into a Smart Thinker with a new habit of reading his books.
Let me first start by saying I am not a poker player, although I do love to watch and play the game recreationally. Further, I passed over this book several times because I had never heard of the author, and was unsure of his experience.
What surprised me about this book was the high level applications of neuroscience, behavioral psychology, and learning principles being used within the profession of poker. And even though the author didn't explicitly use any "lean" or "agile" business analogies, he implied throughout that the most effective players seek continuous improvement through the processes of honest self-evaluation and isolated experiments; with the goal of obtaining validated learning.
I don't think I have read a better "real world" application of the afore mentioned subjects so adeptly intertwined into a simple and understandable narrative. The author's focus is never self directed. Instead he provides a brutally honest look at what it takes to be a successful poker player; not just for a singular event, but for the entirety of a career.
Lastly, I was introduced to a few new neuroscience topics. As a self proclaimed neuro-geek with a library largely comprised of books related to this field, I never expected to come away from a poker book with these new valuable nuggets. My initial concern about the author's credentials was overwhelmingly placated. Even though I know slightly more about the author after having read this book, I can say at a minimum, he demonstrates an intellect equivalent to other authors I have read whose careers are entirely based in neuroscience.
Out of my entire library this book resides in the top 10.
If Chip and Dan Heath's "Made to Stick" is the "stickiness" of an idea, then "Pitch Anything" is the "applicator". Metaphorically, these two books combine to create the "PostIt Note" of goal driven idea sharing.
I did...and I harnessed the material two days later when pitching my CEO on a new business idea.
This book is not about selling. It is about reaching your audience in a way that harnesses the neuroscience behind how we receive and respond to new information. I should also mention that I was able to speak personally with Oren Klaff before pitching my CEO. He responded to my request for help in less than 48 hrs of my email. His intuitive understanding of my issue was spot on, and his advice was sincere and extremely helpful.
Strong Alternative Approach
No. Not because it wasn't worth listening to in one sitting, but because the material is best suited for those interested in taking the time for self reflection and application.
