Ensconced in a lovely tropical villa on idyllic Triggerfish Lane, Jim Davenport anticipates the good life to come. But this isn't living -- it's Florida, and the neighborhood is not quite what it seems. It's got overly aggressive Little League parents, drug-free Rastafarians, homicidal hookers, unnatural sex and casual violence. Oh, yes, and there's a psychopathic serial killer-cum-Sunshine-State folklorist named Serge A. Storms living directly across the street.

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

What did you love best about The Ocean at the End of the Lane?

i love the way neil gaiman reads his stories. i wish all authors would read their own stories. they emphasize all the right things and make the characters sound the way they did in their minds as they wrote. it all sounds and feels so right.

Which character – as performed by Neil Gaiman – was your favorite?

    hmmmmm.......i'm such a fan, that's a tough question

If you could take any character from The Ocean at the End of the Lane out to dinner, who would it be and why?

lettie, of course, i want to know her story

On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

    probably

Who was your favorite character and why?

    i couldn't finish this book

How did the narrator detract from the book?

narrator added an urgency that was unbelievable, didn't use punctuation, and was too breathy.

Do you think The Talisman needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    no

    Any additional comments?

narrator has a great voice but did not suit this story. his reading style was all wrong.

Richard Mayhew is an unassuming young businessman living in London, with a dull job and a pretty but shrewish fiancée. Then one night he stumbles upon a girl lying on the sidewalk, bleeding. He stops to help her, and his life is changed forever. Soon he finds himself living in a London most people would never have dreamed of: a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels. It is a world that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations.

Would you consider the audio edition of Neverwhere to be better than the print version?

that's a tough call. i loved the book and like to get the audio version of stories that i'd like to read again. i think i'll go with the audio version because i get to hear the book in the tone intended by the author.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Neverwhere?

no fave. i just loved the reading

Have you listened to any of Neil Gaiman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

i downloaded a short story, that helped me to decide to go with the unabridged neverwhere.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    not a particular moment

    Any additional comments?

a very worthwhile read and a very worthwhile listen. neil gaiman is one of my favorite authors. i will listen to more of the books i've read.

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

If you could sum up A Prayer for Owen Meany in three words, what would they be?

    a must "read"

What did you like best about this story?

i read this book, a couple of times, years ago. I like to listen to audio books that i've already loved in print. i pick up on nuances that i may have missed in print. with owen meany, i hadn't missed a thing. all of the minutiae that i enjoyed the first time(s) were there, it was a story being told to me by john wheelwright. i was as moved by the story this time as i was years ago.

john irving creates characters that i want to know. i want to meet them and commiserate. owen is my most favorite. i will probably listen to this again. i loved the narration of joe barrett and the voices he gave to the characters. it's difficult to imagine owen's voice when reading and his "owen voice" was spot on.

i just finished listening to the story and i miss it already.

What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I very much enjoyed the character he brought to the voices.

Who was the most memorable character of A Prayer for Owen Meany and why?

obviously owen. he's a powerful and moving character and will last through generations.

Warning: You may have a huge, invisible spider living in your skull. This is not a metaphor. You will dismiss this as ridiculous fearmongering. Dismissing things as ridiculous fearmongering is, in fact, the first symptom of parasitic spider infection - the creature secretes a chemical into the brain to stimulate skepticism, in order to prevent you from seeking a cure. That’s just as well, since the “cure” involves learning what a chain saw tastes like. You can’t feel the spider, because it controls your nerve endings.

Where does This Book Is Full of Spiders rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

i'm still listening to this and loving it

What was one of the most memorable moments of This Book Is Full of Spiders?

i love the way Nick Podehl does the different characters

What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

he brings the characters to life and makes a very believable david wong

If you could rename This Book Is Full of Spiders, what would you call it?

so this is what they mean by "a rollicking good time" with some spiders and zombies

    Any additional comments?

I will have to listen to this again once it's done

Would you try another book from Robert McCammon and/or Richard Thomas?

this is one of my favorite books and i was really enjoying the story as i drove until i realized that huge portions were missing. as a book, the story is so full of the magic and mystery of childhood with layer after layer of the story unfolding. as an audiobook, it was just a so-so story. richard thomas did a good job with what was available but don't waste your money on this, read the book, it is excellent, this just made me feel ripped off.
