The land of Terre d'Ange is a place of unsurpassing beauty and grace. It is said that angels found the land and saw it was good...and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.

Wow...I have to say this is the most disappointing purchase I have made in my 8 years at Audible....WORST EVER! The first 8 hours is just about how to build sado-masochistic, bi-sexual, whore-spys....Geez, REALLY could have done without it. It's a real shame too because I think the universe was well conceived and the political intrigues were well thought out but I just can't get past the graphic S&M sex scenes. Like having a nice Kobe steak with a dead squirrel on the plate. And, yes I listened to it all.

In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

With this extraordinary first volume in what promises to be an epoch-making masterpiece, Neal Stephenson hacks into the secret histories of nations and the private obsessions of men, decrypting with dazzling virtuosity the forces that shaped this century.

    "Great idea....but crippling abridgement problems"
    Overall

I've been a Stephenson fan ever since Audible introduced me to him two years ago. I leapt into Diamond Age with out a second thought after hearing Snow Crash and was not the least bit disappointed. Always one to be distrustful of "abridgements", however, I really really like Stephenson, so I gave Cryptonomicon a try....here comes the hammer.... What a HUGE disappointment! Even with the "synopses" at various intervals, it is frustratingly difficult to keep track of the characters and especially their relationship to each other. I had hoped that the presence of "unabridged excerpts" would have kept that from happening. This story is too good to be hacked up like this; the subject is just too geeky to lose that much background. Wait for the unabridgement.

Because this is a traditional Chinese legal thriller, it would be best if you listened to the explanation of the differences between American/European crime stories and traditional Chinese detective stories. The translator has a 40 minute appendix describing the various devices within the traditional Chinese detective novel and it is VERY helpful. His appendix begins at 7:42:15.
