Sarah Vowell's special brand of armchair history makes the bizarre and esoteric fascinatingly relevant and fun. She takes us from the modern-day reenactment of an Indian massacre to the Mohegan Sun casino, from old-timey Puritan poetry, where "righteousness" is rhymed with "wilderness," to a Mayflower-themed waterslide. Throughout, The Wordy Shipmates is rich in historical fact, humorous insight, and social commentary by one of America's most celebrated voices.

Mari says: "Vowell Nailed It Again"
    "Absolutely the best !!!"
    Overall

Amazingly fun. Hard to believe a subject like the Puritans could be this interesting or this funny. Ms. Vowell is a national treasure.

The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn’t past but prologue. The stunning rise, fall, and rescue of Wall Street in the bubble-and-bailout era was the coming-out party for the network of looters who sit at the nexus of American political and economic power. The grifter class - made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding - has been growing in power for a generation.

    "Amazing but scary"
    Overall

One of the best books dealing with the financial meltdown. If this book doesn't shake you up, nothing will. The only reason these crooks haven't been indicted is because once you started arresting people you wouldn't know when to stop. This is a perfect illustration of Obama's dilemma, keep your friends close and keep your enemies closer.

From one of America's most talented historians and winner of a LA Times Book Prize comes a brilliant new account of Richard Nixon that reveals the riveting backstory to the red state/blue state resentments that divide our nation today. Told with urgency and sharp political insight, Nixonland recaptures America's turbulent 1960s and early 1970s and reveals how Richard Nixon rose from the political grave to seize and hold the presidency.

Frank says: "A 5-Star Book Injured by the Narrator"
    "Excellent but sickening"
    Overall

Well done. It's amazing how corrupt and morally bankrupt Nixon was. How many soldiers and innocent civilians died waiting for Nixon's "secret plan" to end the war? As far as Watergate, anyone who says "every politician does the same" should read this book. Nixon takes paranoia, corruption, and just plain evil to new dimensions.

This book is the previously untold and epic story of how a political newcomer with no money and an alien name grew into the world's most powerful leader. But it is also a uniquely intimate portrait of the person behind the iconic posters and the Secret Service code name Renegade. Drawing on a dozen unplugged interviews, as well as 21 months covering his campaign as it traveled from coast to coast, Richard Wolffe answers the simple yet enduring question about Barack Obama: Who is he?

Carl says: "Insights into the greatest Presidential Campaign"
"Inside story of an historic election"
    Overall

Wolfe does an excellent job capturing the mood of the campaign, from unrestrained optimism to crushing doubt. This election will become transformitive in American history once we have time to gain a better perspective. The only critism of this excellent book is that it jumps back and forth to Iowa. It seemed like every time a turning point is reached, somehow we're back in Iowa. Overall, a tremendous book.

  • The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder

Best-selling author Vincent Bugliosi has written the most important and thought-provoking book of his prolific career. In a meticulously researched and clearly presented legal case that puts George W. Bush on trial for murder after he leaves his presidency, Bugliosi delivers a searing indictment of the president and his administration.

    Keith says: "Very disappointing"
    "Breathtakingly bad"
    Overall

I kept waiting for the book to get better but I can't take any more. No new material, just Buglosi's inflated ego. Bad doesn't do justice to just how wretched this book is.

Say the name 'Enron' and most people believe they've heard all about the story that imperiled a presidency, destroyed a marketplace, and changed Washington and Wall Street forever. But in the hands of Kurt Eichenwald, the players we think we know and the business practices we think have been exposed are transformed into entirely new, and entirely gripping, material. Conspiracy of Fools is an all-true financial and political thriller of cinematic proportions.

ltlrags says: "More fiction-like than a novel"
    "Amazing, brillant,scary."
    Overall

I couldn't stop listening. As much as I enjoyed it I was saddened to realize that this is only the tip of the iceberg in corruption in both the corporate and political culture. Very disturbing but just like a car wreck, you can't help but to gawk.
