  • Getting Stoned with the Savages: A Trip through the Islands of Fiji and Vanuatu

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By J. Maarten Troost
    • Narrated By Simon Vance
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

After two grueling years on the island of Tarawa, Troost was in no hurry to return to the South Pacific until he began to feel remarkably out of place in modern America. He knew it was time to set off again for parts unknown. Here he tells the story of his time on Vanuatu, a cluster of islands where he struggles against typhoons, earthquakes, and giant centipedes but finds himself swept up in the laid-back, clothing-optional lifestyle of the islanders.

    L. Worthington says: "My new favorite author!"
    "Laugh- out- loud funny!"

Highly entertaining way to spend time on the treadmill at the gym. You may find people staring at your burst of laughter. Warning: a few F words used, but so funny I chose to overlook them.

Claire says: "Peter Firth gets this book"
    "A wonderful classic!"

I had read this in high school, and, even though I couldn't remember the plot, always remembered it as a story I liked it. This audible version was delightful and I truly enjoyed my listen.

It's the early 1960s, and Anna has never seen a person with dark skin - until she meets Sister Anne. Although just a short listen I enjoyed this story about Sister Anne's kindness to change a child' s misperceptions.

  • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows
    • Narrated By Paul Baymer, Susan Duerden, Roselyn Landor, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: The best book club you’ve never heard of – but will be eager to join, courtesy of a full cast of true characters. January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb....

Kent says: "MUCH better than I ever expected! Give it a try!"
    "A delightful old-fashioned love story"

I really enjoyed the story and the narrators' voices. There was enough history thrown in to encourage me to read further about the island's history.

  • All But My Life

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Gerda Weissmann Klein
    • Narrated By Grace Conlin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A classic of Holocaust literature, Gerda Weissmann Klein's celebrated memoir tells the moving story of a young woman's 3 frightful years as a slave laborer of the Nazis and her miraculous liberation. All But My Life stands as the ultimate lesson in humanity, hope, and friendship.

Michael says: "All But My Life"

I always marvel at people who perserve through unspeakable horrors, yet manage to overcome, grow, and suceed. I liked the slow speed of the reader, it made me feel as if I were in the room with Mrs Klein as she was retelling her memories.

    Ella says: "Just OK"
    "Don't trust Oprah"

I enjoyed this book emmensely until the end. I invested a huge portion of my time listening and totally felt robbed. I have never been as disappointed in an ending in my life.

Fifteen-year-old Christopher Boone has Asperger's Syndrome, a condition similar to autism. I highly recommend listening to this book.I found the story line very cleaver in educating me about how the brain functions with autism.

  • The Scarlet Pimpernel

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Baroness Orczy
    • Narrated By Ralph Cosham
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"Who is this man, this Scarlet Pimpernel?" Each day this question grew more pressing to the leaders of the French Revolution. Only this man and his band of followers threatened their total power. Only this maddeningly elusive figure defied the vast network of fanatics, informers, and secret agents that the Revolution spread out to catch its enemies.

Diane says: "excellent classic and excellent narrator"
    "A good listen"

The author paints vivid scenes that are wonderfully entertaining. The end of the book grew tedious with repetition of several phrases ad nauseum. Still I overall enjoyed the story and recommend it to other listeners.

  • Citizen of the Galaxy

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Robert A. Heinlein
    • Narrated By Lloyd James

Citizen of the Galaxy takes place far in the future, when the human race has spread out to colonize other planets. In a slave market in the capital of Jubbul and the Nine Worlds, an auctioneer announces, "Lot 97. A boy." Slavery is commonplace in Jubbul, and the sight of the ragged, starving boy, Thorby, on the auction block is not unusual. What does puzzle bystanders and Thorby himself is his purchase by crippled Baslim, the beggar who sits every day in a corner of the marketplace.

    L. says: "One of Heinlein's best"
    "A very nice surprise!!!!"

I really enjoyed the story and was amused by the "future technology" of a book published in 1857, 2 years before I was born.

  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Sherman Alexie
    • Narrated By Sherman Alexie

Born poor and hydrocephalic, Arnold Spirit survives brain surgery. But his enormous skull, lopsided eyes, profound stuttering, and frequent seizures target him for abuse on his Indian reservation. Protected by a formidable friend, the book-loving artist survives childhood. And then - convinced his future lies off the rez - the bright 14-year-old enrolls in an all-white high school 22 miles away.

    FanB14 says: "Absolutely Entertaining Memoir"
    "Enjoyable and enlightening listen."

This book enlightened our family on the plight of Native Americans living on a reservation while at the same time keeping us well-entertained on a recent vacation. While my daughter found the voice of the narator to be annoying, my husband and I disagreed and found it to be appropriate for the story.
