  • The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: Book I: The Mysterious Howling

Of especially naughty children, it is sometimes said: “They must have been raised by wolves.” The Incorrigible children actually were. Discovered in the forests of Ashton Place, the Incorrigibles are no ordinary children: Alexander keeps his siblings in line with gentle nips; Cassiopeia has a bark that is (usually) worse than her bite; and Beowulf is alarmingly adept at chasing squirrels.

This book is not just for children! I am in my late-twenties, and I am hooked on this series. Penelope Lumley is such a likeable protagonist, and the Incorrigible children are such interesting characters. I highly recommend this series.

  • Jane Eyre [Brilliance Edition]

After a sad and neglected childhood as an orphan, Jane Eyre was hired by Edward Rochester as governess for his ward. Jane was pleased with the quiet country life at Thornfield, with the beautiful old manor house and gardens, with the book-filled library, and with her own comfortable room. But there were stories of a strange tenant, a woman who laughed like a maniac, and who stayed in rooms on the third floor.

Jane Eyre is a classic book. I love the heroine's quiet strength, and her resolve to do what she believes is right, despite how it conflicts with what would be pleasurable. Her self-respect despite her low station is really admirable.

I think the voice actor, Susan Ericksen, was such an excellent choice for this book. Her soft-spoken performance, and her range of emotion, seemed like a natural fit for Jane, and she was a delight to listen to for the entire length of the book. Hearing the book read by Susan Ericksen really added to the experience.
