The story was interesting mostly for the info on Egyptian history. My biggest problem was the narrator. He just didn't seem to care about the story at all. No emotion, no attempt to make the characters distinct. Not one of the author's best stories, made worse by the narration.
I am only a 3 and a half hours in but oh my this is boring!! I'm moving on to something else. Maybe I'll come back and hope it will actually be interesting.
I've read all of this series and I think this one was the best. It filled a void I didn't even know I'd missed. We see a young Rutledge before the war that permanently changes him. An intriguing mystery and a glimpse of how Ian's life could have been without the horror or war.
I started this book but ended up returning it. Maybe it gets better later but I got really turned off by the gruesome violence. I also do not care for the reader.
This is a sort of interesting book but too wordy. And, I love coffee but I don't need to hear all the details. I'll keep the author on my list but it'll take awhile before I listen to another. Too many other better authors out there. Good narration though.
I looked forward to the final book of the trilogy. This one was interesting but not as good as the first two. However, because the "history" in this book occurred during my lifetime, I enjoyed relating to what the characters were experiencing.
As some reviewers have mentioned, Follett gets a little preachy sometimes and there are way too many graphic sex scenes. But all in all I recommend this book if you have already read the first two.
I've listened to both books in the series. Not bad. Good stories. I don't care so much for the narrator because I don't like how she does men's voices. She makes every man sound unpleasant and grouchy. Nonetheless, I'll listen again when there's another book in the series.
It was a good listen, probably true to what those who lived through WWI experienced. I really hope, though, that we get more Maisie Dobbs stories from Ms. Winspear.
I have really come to appreciate this series of stories with characters I care about and stories that are intriguing. Love the narrator.
I have read or listened to all of James Rollins books. This one is very hard to take mostly because of the narrator. Just terrible!! He totally detracts from the story and is making it very difficult to finish. Please get someone else next time. But please Not Scott Brick either!
I have read most of Douglas Preston's books. This one was kind of silly except when it was quite violent. Just not that good.
