In Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace - and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox - possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

If you could sum up A Tale for the Time Being in three words, what would they be?

A writer finds a young Japanese girl's diary sealed in a ziplock bag on the beach in Canada and investigates the events revealed in the diary.

What did you like best about this story?

Original, literary and quirky with plot twists that are unpredictable. A thinking woman's story.

Which character – as performed by Ruth Ozeki – was your favorite?

The Buddhist nun grandmother. The narrator's depiction of the Buddhist chants is incredible--as is her narration in French, Japanese and English. A wonderful narrator.

Who was the most memorable character of A Tale for the Time Being and why?

Obviously, the young Japanese girl, ripped from her upscale life in Silicon Valley and sent back to a Japan she has never experienced before. Her cruel hazings by Japanese teenagers and her search for a meaning to her life are both ubiquitous in their universality and original in their details.

    Any additional comments?

I loved all of the characters and the fact that the point of view and location is constantly changing. I also love the magical realism that begins to pervade the plot and the way the two plotlines interweave. I keep looking for a new title by this author. I would read anything she has written.

Three women rent a holiday house in Cornwall for the summer. Each brings with her children, baggage (in every sense), and expectations, in this sparkling follow-up to Goodbye, Jimmy Choo. There's control freak Imogen; fluffy and easygoing Sophie; and Jo, a friend of Sophie's who was roped in at the last minute when the first choice of housemate pulled out. A sardonic East London GP, all she really wants to do is put her feet up. Can these three polar opposites ever get along?

What was most disappointing about Annie Sanders’s story?

There were no surprises and no cleverness in the writing.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    I found her voice irritating

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Warnings of Gales?

Sorry, but all of them! i have tried to listen to this book, finally resorting to using it to put me to sleep at night...subconciously I've probably listened to most of it, but in reality I've only made it through a few chapters and I just don't want to go on hearing it.

    Any additional comments?

i just don't find any of these characters interesting. Nor am I curious about what is going to happen to them.

Augie is a poor but exuberant boy growing up in Chicago during the Depression. While his friends all settle into chosen professions, Augie demands a special destiny. He tests out a wild succession of occupations, proudly rejecting each as too limiting - until he tangles with the glamorous perfectionist Thea.

This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I can't imagine who would enjoy this book.

What could Saul Bellow have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

After a number of sessions trying to listen to it, I still couldn't detect a plot. The characters provoked no interest for me and the narrative was rambling and boring. Sorry Saul. I hated your book!

How could the performance have been better?

I think the reader was fine, but I found the accent irritating and a bit affected.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Irritation.

    Any additional comments?

This is the only book I've ever been unable to complete listening to on Audible. Perhaps when I'm desperate, I'll try it again and it will click that time. In that case, I'll change my review, but for now, I'd say skip this one.
