Since Brene Brown took TEDtalks by storm, I've been following her work. I believe this is a "game-changer" for lack of a better term. We can all improve continuously, and Brene's ten guideposts are to the heart and readily accomplished. I changed my communication immediately and I thought I was pretty aware of the top parenting skills. I learned! A must listen... a "hallpass" to have made mistakes and turn relationships around without shame.
Yes! Ann Brashares writes the story of time as no barrier to love. Have you ever felt that you've known someone forever, an inexplicable level of comfort and deep connection? Delve into the tale of love crossing thousands of years and be swept away by the possibilities. Magical.
Snowman is the unlikeliest of winning show jumpers and his story will make you cheer. From the truck headed to the slaughter house, to lesson horse for a girls' school, to a beloved family member carrying children bareback swimming....to a champion show jumper competing with the elite of the elite... The Eighty-Dollar Champion will not disappoint. I love that this is a true story and the reader is left with the knowledge that we all have that spark to be more than we seem to be.
Yes! I laughed, I cried, I hoped, I cheered... I learned so much about disabilities and the amazing people and caregivers. It reminded me that we have so many out there in need. Jojo Moyes again touches the soul and brings us into the lives of the disadvantaged in such a way as to catalyze change in attitudes, perspectives, understanding that translates into a desire to act and help. A must listen!
This historical novel opened my eyes in an unexpected way and is one of the best books I've listened to on audible. Set in my home state and even in a city where I lived, I was really surprised to learn about the statutes that state legislators put on the books, particularly regarding emancipation and education of slaves. These laws now seem impossible to believe and drove the necessity of keeping deep secrets to protect and bind families of freed slaves. Since Daniel Day Lewis portrayed Abraham Lincoln in the recent Spielberg film, I had a refreshed perspective that truly benefited from viewing the issues from other vantage points. Seeing the events through the eyes of a young emancipated girl made this story extraordinary. Lois Leveen has a storytelling gift and the performance by Robin Miles was wonderful.
One of my favorite books is Anne's Gift from the Sea. I've given it many times to friends. This historical novel really opened my eyes about the challenges of her life and her dreams and gave me quite a different context for her own novel. A must read, but if you don't know a lot about the Lindberghs, be prepared for some surprises. Love how strong this woman was, through it all.
Jojo Moyes delivers again! Great story about pursuing one's dreams, love and loss, finding one's way, persevering against the odds and faith in humanity restored. It's clear that Jojo Moyes has a background with horses but did a great deal of study into the classic and extraordinary movements of battlefield dressage. Moyes perfectly describes the bond between horse and rider and I loved the Quotes from Xenophon (on Horsemanship circa 345 BC) that began each chapter. Many of us are familiar with the Lipizzaners of the famous Spanish Riding School of Vienna. The French version has a military base and is known as the the Cadre Noir. The movements, scenes and interactions are so well written, I felt as though I were right inside the story experiencing everything first hand. I couldn't stop listening! There is a truly fabulous mix in the cast of characters and the narration is really excellent.
