In Imperfect, Jim Abbot retraces his remarkable journey. Born without a right hand, Jim Abbott as a boy dreamed of being a great athlete. Raised in Flint, Michigan, by parents who saw in his condition not a disability but an extraordinary opportunity, Jim became a two-sport standout in high school, then an ace pitcher for the University of Michigan. But his journey was only beginning. By 21, he’d won the gold medal game at the 1988 Olympics and cracked the starting rotation of the California Angels....

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

I bought this book on my wife's recommendation, and all of the strong reviews it got. I read through about a third of the book and never made a connection with the book . I kept hoping to get engaged, but never did. Just too slow a book for me.

Whatever happened to Calico Joe? It began quietly enough with a pulled hamstring. The first baseman for the Cubs AAA affiliate in Wichita went down as he rounded third and headed for home. The next day, Jim Hickman, the first baseman for the Cubs, injured his back. The team suddenly needed someone to play first, so they reached down to their AA club in Midland, Texas, and called up a 21-year-old named Joe Castle. He was the hottest player in AA and creating a buzz....

I stopped reading Grisham books after the first few. This is not a typical Grisham book. What a great short book, about baseball in 1972, about father-son relationships, about leaving a legacy, about doing the right thing. I highly recommend this if you're looking for a short simple great book.

Anyone can create it in his or her career, family and beyond. Based on John Wooden’s own method to victory, Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success reveals that success is built block by block, where each block is a crucial principle contributing to life-long achievement in every area of life.

I'm a huge fan of John Wooden. I was looking for a good book with his philosophy. This book certainly is good for that. However, two things kept me from giving this a higher review.
    1. This book is more religious that I thought it would be. I probably should have read the description better.
    2. This is one of the few books that is better in print, like a textbook would be, because I would have liked to refer to a printed chart of his pyramid and make notes.

North Korea is isolated and hungry, bankrupt and belligerent. It is also armed with nuclear weapons. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped - but Shin Dong-hyuk did.

I felt as though I was listening to a fictional story. It's unbelievable how bad the conditions are in North Korea, particularly in the camps. What a fascinating story. The author does a great job comparing / contrasting these camps to others such as the German concentration camps. And I was interested in his discussion on how the situation cannot drastically change without destroying the South Korean (and perhaps global) economies.

Popular motivational speaker and best-selling author Chip Conley has created an exciting, new, immediately accessible visual lexicon for mastering the age of uncertainty. Making mathematics out of emotions may seem a counterintuitive idea, but it’s an inspiring and incredibly effective one in Chip Conley’s hands.

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

I was born after 11/22/63, so I don't have any recollections of the day. But this was a great book, full of suspense, highs and lows, and more suspense. At times I found it hard to believe this was by the author of Carrie, Christine, and all other books of that genre. But this definitely had the suspense of a Stephen King book, without all of the gore.

For months, Mitch Rapp has been steadily working his way through a list of men, bullet by bullet. With each kill, the tangled network of monsters responsible for the slaughter of 270 civilians becomes increasingly clear. He is given his next target: a plump Libyan diplomat who is prone to drink and is currently in Paris without a single bodyguard. Rapp finds him completely unprotected and asleep in his bed. With confidence in his well-honed skills and conviction of the man’s guilt, he easily sends a bullet into the man’s skull. But in the split second it takes the bullet to leave the silenced pistol, everything changes.
