Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Grisham is Back. Almost. Michael Beck was masterful with his reading. The timing, inflection, various voices were outstanding. The plot was outstanding -- from start to finish. But the book was longer than it should have been. It slowed down in the middle. The final third of the book frustrated me because the author was so obviously over-working the plot in an attempt to create suspense. The way the interaction with Seth's brother transpired in the hospital, the missed flights on the way home, getting thrown in jail with no ability to bond out, these were all too transparent efforts to create a cliff hanger of an ending. Other than that, welcome back to one of my favorite authors.

New novel in the Liaden Universe series. Over a quarter million copies sold in this series to-date! Space ships, action, adventure – all tied together with a strong dollop of romance and family saga – make this a compelling series for a wide range of readers, from romance to military SF lovers alike.

Has Ghost Ship turned you off from other books in this genre?

No but it certainly has turned me off to this series

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Noi

    Any additional comments?

The title is poetic irony. For we see relatively little of the Ghost Ship and it doesn't much impress. This would not be a good entry point to the series. The author makes little effort to explain what has already transpired. It will take a while to figure it out what is going on and why.

The book is definitely for those who are more in touch with their feminine side. Lots of time spent on relations, family ties, what to wear, dancing, etc. There is relatively little action. The reader has a pleasant voice and represents the women well. However her attempt at Father's voice is --- well??

Sophie Katz's relationship with the irresistible and occasionally insufferable P.I. Anatoly Darinsky is on the fritz when a friend recruits Sophie's investigation skills to decode her possibly two-timing husband's strange behavior. When Sophie shows up in a short, red cocktail dress and her friend's hubby winds up dead, the loveable would-be sleuth can't help but take on the job.

What would have made Obsession, Deceit, and Really Dark Chocolate better?

Skip the narrow minded judgmental rants about people to the right of Michael Moore

Has Obsession, Deceit, and Really Dark Chocolate turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. This is one of my favorite genres. It has just turned me off to this author

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Obsession, Deceit, and Really Dark Chocolate?

    Where to begin?

    Any additional comments?

I thought this book would be my introduction to an enjoyable series in the same vein as series like Joe Grey, and Chet and Bernie. Was I ever disappointed. This is the first time I can remember listening to a book where I could not eventually come to admire at least something about the main character. She is a sarcastic, dissembling, manipulative character with an arrogant disdain for just about everyone she encounters. Her only redeeming quality seems to be that she says she never lies to her friends -- which is also a lie. The plot plods along so slowly that I had to keep reminding myself what the mystery was that she was trying to solve. The two main characters seem to be a thinly veiled rip off of Stephanie Plum and Ranger. The only difference being that I like Stephanie and find her to be funny. To make matters worse, the book is a running diatribe against Republicans, Christians, conservatives and right-to-lifers. They are all portrayed (in a very narrow minded, judgmental way I might add) as narrow minded, judgmental, mean spirited hypocrites. I wouldn't want to pay money to endure this kind of continual rant in a venue like this against Republicans or Democrats.

After listening to nearly all of the first story I decided I better check the reviews before I wasted any more time. It's a good thing I did. I will not be finishing it. In the first story the Republican Party and international corporations have caused global warming which caused the destruction of much of civilization. So the heroes are environmentalists living in trees in the northwest. Al Gore might enjoy it, but not me.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I have read or listened to all of the Belgariad and Elenium series. They were outstanding.Based on my past experience with David Eddings and all the the 5 star ratings this book received I purchased it. I have suffered through 4 hours of this book and I don't think I can stand any more of it. First, you need to start a spreadsheet of all characters and locations. I am confused about who is whom and where is where. Then there is the reading. The reader sounds like he is swallowing his tongue every time he pronounces a name. I have listened through 4 hours of absolute drivel about this kingdom and that kingdom and this person and that person. Does it get any better than this? if so, how much more do I have to listen to before somebody does something interesting?

What didn’t you like about Cameron Beierle’s performance?

The way he garbled all the names.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

boredom and confusion over all the names and locations

I recently purchased Fire Jumping" to see why the author is so popular. I was so disappointed with it that I never finished it. Although There were bursts of beautiful word smithing, in the main, Fire Jumpin was like a profanity laced Harlequin Romance.
Then I read all the reviews of this book that said, "Roberts is back." So I thought I would take another chance. I am so glad I did. I enjoyed this book as much as anything I have ever read or listened to. Julia Whelan does one of the most masterful readings to be found on audible. I am especially impressed with how well she did the men's voices. If got to see what other books she has read. As to the book, the pacing. the description of the surroundings, the cast of characters, the character development, the prose are all outstanding. The dialogue is as good as it gets. Makes you want to take a vacation in the Ozarks. Well done!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I've been a fan of Reynolds, but 16 hours into this book I finally gave up on it. Most of the book is taken up with an irrational and unbelievable cat fight that last for decades. Reynolds seems to be more interested in coming up with a novel (pardon the pun) concept than an interesting or entertaining plot.

Has Pushing Ice turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

What about John Lee’s performance did you like?

    All of it

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Little Fuzzies was one of the best books in years. This book is nearly on a par with it. The plot is ingenious, the pacing outstanding, the character development is good. There was only one negative for me. As the book progressed, the profanity became more and more frequent. Just a personal preference for me, but I find it very distracting.

Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature. But there’s also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive firefighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field.
