Yes. This book was one odd failure in the Christie collection.
I thought the reviewers who made bad comments about this book must have been mistaken. Not so. Hugh Fraser's performance was excellent, but even the best reader couldn't make the ridiculous plot less ridiculous. It was a James Bond fantasy starring Hercule Poirot, a character that doesn't fit at all. The whole thing was silly without humor. This was my ninth Christie listen, all the rest very good to excellent stories. I still want to hear more Poirot mysteries, and will bet on the fact that Christie didn't repeat the mistake she made with this one.
Disappointed is an understatement. The story was absurd, the scenes were impossible to imagine, and the characters were lame. If there was a point to the whole thing, I failed to grasp it. I've read several Discworld (20's and up) and loved them. Now I'm not sure how far back in the series I can safely go without hitting another one like this.
The best thing about A Tale of Two Cities is everything -- the characters, the plot, the exceptional writing, and the emotional pull of nearly every sentence.
All the characters came alive. My favorites are Jarvis Lorry and Sydney Carton.
I've read this story several times and always discover new feelings and images, but Jon Smith has made it far better with this excellent performance. I would recommend any audiobook read by him.
A Holiday gift, mid-December, about a divorced Buddist? Exactly what holiday were you thinking about?
Once you've begun, you won't want to pause. A great story and excellent production!
Each main character is highlighted in their own chapter, many times experiencing the same events through their own eyes. In this way, the sarcastic humor is repeated over and over, making it even more funny and sad. I first read this book 25 years ago, and loved it. This recording by Jay O. Sanders, is the best performance I have ever heard in an audio book. I would highly recommend it, especially to those who read it long ago or have seen the movie version.
