  • Jesus of Nazareth

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Pope Benedict XVI
    • Narrated By Don Leslie
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In this bold, momentous work, the pope, in his first book written as Benedict XVI, seeks to salvage the person of Jesus from recent "popular" depictions and to restore Jesus' true identity as discovered in the Gospels. Through his brilliance as a theologian and his personal conviction as a believer, the pope shares a rich, compelling, flesh-and-blood portrait of Jesus and incites us to encounter, face-to-face, the central figure of the Christian faith.

    "Great Content Beautifully Narrated"

This book brought Jesus to life in a compelling new way for me. It is a book that is more comprehendable in listening to it aloud -- I had the feeling that I was sitting at a wonderful teacher's feet in much the same way that Jesus' disciples did 2000 years ago. The reader in the audioversion did a remarkable job of capturing Benedict's gentle persona. I have since ordered the printed copy of Jesus of Nazareth to be able to reread in further depth.

A previous reviewer's comment (gentle warning) about the dry and academic character of the introduction is very helpful. I almost didn't get through it thinking it was going to be well beyond me but am very glad I did. The book came more alive with fresh insight on each new page.

    Highly recommended!

  • The Confessions

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs and 3 mins)
    • By Saint Augustine
    • Narrated By Adam Dudley

Considered by many to be the first autobiography/memoir ever written, Confessions is a retrospective view of a life challenged by uncertainty, doubt, human frailty, and earthly desires. Augustine discovers and cherishes a deeply personal relationship with his God, all while describing the day-to-day dealings of his life in the fading, corrupt days of the Roman Empire.

    Evelyn says: "Nice book but......"
    "Narrator is the Problem!"

The book is a classic but I am struggling to listen because the reader uses absolutely no expression or inflection. He destroys the content! The other version available on Audible doesn't sound any more promising on the sample.

Audible needs to find a new versio....

  • Anna Karenina

    • UNABRIDGED (36 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Leo Tolstoy
    • Narrated By Davina Porter

This is the story of the unhappy family of Anna Karenina. The novel contains much concerning Tolstoy's spiritual crisis and his search for the meaning of life. But it is also chiefly about marriage, and the growth and death of love.

    "Even Better Aloud"

This was my first audiobook from Audible. I chose it because I wanted to reread Anna Karenina -- it is a favorite of mine. Hearing it aloud reminded me that until the last century these great novels were meant to be told and read aloud. The capable narration and dramatic interpretation of Davina Porter made it much easier to keep track of the unfamiliar names and story lines and brought each main character to life. As for the story itself, it was one of my favorites and is now even more so with hearing of it and the new insights I got this time around.

    Highly recommended!
