Give me a good tale, one to make me stay up all night! I love non-fiction, and 19th century Victorian fiction. Georgette Heyer is a worthy successor to Jane Austen. Married, 2 kids, worked in tech support.

Plantagenet Palliser, the Duke of Omnium and former Prime Minister of England, is widowed and wracked by grief. Struggling to adapt to life without his beloved Lady Glencora, he works hard to guide and support his three adult children. Palliser soon discovers, however, that his own plans for them are very different from their desires. Sent down from university in disgrace, his two sons quickly begin to run up gambling debts.

I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved this story. It really is a great story about a stubborn man and his children. He has to learn to move with the times. Doesn't that happen in every family in every decade?

Keep listening, it starts kind of slow, as the Duke has just lost his beloved wife and the book has the air of that mourning over it. Once the children start acting up, so does the book. The length of this book is just right for me, not too short or too long - although I would like to continue the story!!

This book ends the Pallister story line.

The scene of this entertaining story is laid in a charming English village. The plot centres round Miss Barbara Buncle, a maiden lady who was obliged to write a book because – as she naively explained – her dividends were so poor. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.

    Story

I love a gentle book about a small village with a group of families. Jane Austen said it best, didn't she? Now add wonderful satire. Miss Buncle needs to make some money, so she writes a book, published under the name of John Smith. She innocently writes characters based on the people in the village, but writes them as they really are, not as they want themselves to be seen. The villagers are wanting to sue for libel because the character is obviously them --- but of course it is not them. It's great fun.

Resourceful, adventurous and utterly indefatigable, Sophy is hardly the mild-mannered girl that the Rivenhalls expect when they agree to take her in. Kind-hearted Aunt Lizzy is shocked; stern Cousin Charles and his humourless fiancée Eugenia are disapproving. With her inimitable mixture of exuberance and grace Sophy soon sets about endearing herself to her family, but finds herself increasingly drawn to her cousin. Can she really be falling in love with him, and he with her? And what of his betrothal to Eugenia?

Finally! my favorite Heyer book. And then it has to be adbridged. The Grand Sophy comes to London and sets a whirlwind going. In the end, everyone is happy and in love. Sophy is definitely a 21st century girl in a 19th century world (it's set just after Napoleon's defeat). The editor's did a pretty good job of abridging it. They did cut out some of the parts where you see the softer/funnier side of Charles. Somebody do an unabridged version! Somebody do a movie! Viva la Grand Sophy!

Set in English society before the 1832 Reform Bill, Wives and Daughters centers on the story of youthful Molly Gibson, brought up from childhood by her father. When he remarries, a new stepsister enters Molly's quiet life, the loveable, but worldly and troubling, Cynthia. The narrative traces the development of the two girls into womanhood within the gossiping and watchful society of Hollingford.

"What a wonderful story and listen"
    Overall

I love this book. I love to listen to the story. It pulls me into the story and the lives of these people. The author is witty, and some of Dr. Gibson's statements are worth the price of the book. The BBC adaptation (also wonderful) made me realize that Mrs. Gibson is really a ditzy person who speaks without thinking. Listening with that in mind really brings forward the satire. A true unknown classic.
