  • The Whiskey Rebellion

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 1 min)
    • By William Hogeland
    • Narrated By Simon Vance

A gripping and provocative tale of violence, alcohol, and taxes, The Whiskey Rebellion pits President George Washington and Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton against angry, armed settlers across the Appalachians. Unearthing a pungent segment of early American history long ignored by historians, William Hogeland brings to startling life the rebellion that decisively contributed to the establishment of federal authority.

Kismet says: "Great story and narration"

I've listened to hundreds of Audible titles and dozens of great books. This is among the best. This is a portrait of Hamilton I've not read elsewhere and I learned that as far back as the founding, well-connected members of the government were striving to crush our liberties and bring us into bondage to a hyper-active central government. The book is not a Libertarian screed however and its treatment of all sides is very fair. It does move about quickly and take some sharp turns which is why I'll take the time to listen to it again. I can truly say I learned a ton of new information despite having read dozens of titles about this period of US history. A truly great book.

  • Atlas Shrugged

    • UNABRIDGED (52 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Ayn Rand
    • Narrated By Christopher Hurt
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who had never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

Robert says: "Over before you know it"
    "Glad I listened myself"

With all the negative reviews, I almost didn't take the time to listen to a classic. There is much to disagree with (Rand's atheism being my biggest quibble). Yes, quality was very poor. The long speeches were ponderous. The characters are not in any way real people (good guys perfect, bad guys perfectly evil). It was worth the 52 hour listen however.

  • The World Is Flat: Further Updated and Expanded

    • UNABRIDGED (27 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Thomas L. Friedman
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman

With the "flattening" of the globe, has the world gotten too small and too fast for human beings and their political systems to adjust in a stable manner? Now in a third edition with a new preface, Friedman's account of the flattening of the earth is a modern classic.

Paul W. Johnson says: "worth the listen"
    "If you like cliches..."

This is a runaway bestseller??? I listened to the whole 27 hours and didn't hear anything I haven't been reading in Forbes, WSJ and Business Week for the last 10 years. I guess if you've been in a cave since 1997 or parachuted here from Mars and need a quick lesson on society, this could be helpful. Otherwise, I strongly discourage this. It is full of cliche and group-think. I felt I should have been given a medal for enduring the whole ordeal.

  • Darwin on Trial

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Phillip E. Johnson
    • Narrated By Frederick Davidson

Darwin's theory of evolution is accepted by most educated Americans as simple fact. This easy acceptance, however, hides from us the many ways in which evolution - as an idea - shapes our thinking about a great many things. What if this idea is wrong? What if "evolution" is just a word that covers up scientific ignorance of how the wonders of the living world could have been created? Berkeley law professor Phillip Johnson looks at the evidence for Darwinistic evolution the way a lawyer would - with a cold dispassionate eye for logic and proof.

Douglas says: "Read This After Michael Behe's..."
    "Tremendous book!"

Finally some common sense and real science with respect to the subject of evolution. Should be required reading for every science teacher.

  • Madame Hillary: The Dark Road to the White House

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By R. Emmett Tyrrell, Mark W. Davis
    • Narrated By Richard Rohan

After the tremendous success of her book, Living History, Senator Clinton was sharply criticized by conservative personalities. But the objections to her and her book lacked cohesiveness. Now, Tyrell, Jr. delivers a persuasive argument that Senator Clinton is a power-hungry radical with a hidden agenda who seduces voters with her intelligence, charm, and carefully crafted public persona.

    Amy says: "Excellent"
    "Madame Hillary"

Anything Tyrell writes is outstanding! Someone needed to expose this two-bit sham for the harridan that she is. Bravo!
