  • Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average, and Do Work That Matters

There are only two paths in life: average and awesome. The average path is easy because all you have to do is nothing. The awesome path is more challenging, because things like fear only bother you when you do work that matters. The good news is Start gives listeners practical, actionable insights to be more awesome, more often.

What made the experience of listening to Start the most enjoyable?

Great Stories. I like the part about growing a crazy beard and collecting cats.

What does Jon Acuff bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Awesome professional speaker, great reader by default.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

Great concepts throughout. Critics Math was helpful. I also enjoyed the honesty transparency with things like the story about his honeymoon and wanting to make life long friends LOL. Reminds me to be careful with ideas and expectations.

I also found great insights in understanding ideas / emotions that come along with success that can throw one off track, and even how one can actually sabatoge their own success because of supressed fear. Rang true for me and I'm thankful for what I learned from this book.

In The Go-Getter, Bill Peck, a war veteran, persuades Cappy Ricks, the influential founder of the Rick's Logging & Lumbering Company, to let him prove himself by selling skunk wood in odd lengths - a job that everyone knows can only lead to failure. When Peck goes on to beat his quota, Rick hands Peck the ultimate opportunity and the ultimate test: the quest for an elusive blue vase.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Old people. I do not recommend this book for anyone under age 50. This book is outdated and isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I think a book like 'Start' by John Acuff should be the go-to book for inspiration and a kick in the pants for the younger generation.

Has The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How to Be One turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

Would you be willing to try another one of Jason McCoy’s performances?

    Maybe

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I agree with the premise of the book: be diligent and go through great lengths to get the job done despite the odds. I understand that and I agree with that. HOWEVER, the idea that the work I'm doing is meaningless, or simply a test to see what I'm really like is extremely unappealing to me. I want to do work that matters. At the end of the day, I don't care that the meaningless task led to something better. If the task is meaningless, the situation is demoralizing.

If I was the guy working hard to get the blue vase, I'd say screw you to the boss and quit on the spot. I have no patience for that kind of BS.

Warning if you're thinking of getting this book, the language is VERY old school to the point where I could barely understand it. For example, the names of the characters in the book were so weird that it was just a constant distractor. Reminded me of the useless fiction books I was forced to read in grade 5.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. Good start with the work down of the problem with MBA programs which was helpful, although a bit long. When he started getting into the nuts and bolts of the different types of business structures and such he lost me. I was bored. It was like being in a real MBA program I guess. I think he is well researched and has good ideas, but not the best book overall.

Do you ride the escalator or do you take the stairs? No matter how you define success, it always requires one thing: self-discipline. But as popular speaker and strategist Rory Vaden explains, we live in an "escalator world", one that's filled with shortcuts, quick fixes, and distractions that make it all too easy to slide into procrastination, compromise, and mediocrity. What seems like an easier path is really much harder in the end - and, most important, it won't take you where you want to go.

Awesome book. Helped me in a number of ways. I haven't been to the gym in 4+ years and I started going again this week. Got a good schedule going. I'm way more conscious of the 100s of little choices I make about things every day.

I also noticed this book referenced a number of other books, so I started checking those out as well. I like Secrets of the Millionaire mind.

How to Win Friends and Influence People: A Condensation from the Book by Dale Carnegie is a working handbook in human relations. It isn't merely to be read. It is to be used. If the knowledge it contains isn't applied, it will soon be forgotten. Why not carry this booklet in your pocket every day? Why not read it before you have that difficult interview? Why not review it before you dictate that touchy letter? Why not glance at it every time you are tempted to criticize or complain or talk about what you want?

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I still follow many of the things learned from this book several months later. Whenever I get stressed I go to my things list and think of the next action step, which is usually finding more information. As soon as I remember that I need to gather more information I feel better and I'm more productive.

What did you love best about The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, 10th Anniversary Edition?

Exceed expectations. The part about personal growth.

    Any additional comments?

I remember reading the hard copy version of the book and I didn't get much past the first law: the law of the lid. Made me roll my eyes. When I heard the audio version the same thing happened, and I almost gave up on the book a second time. But the other 20 laws were actually really good and helpful. After I understood the book as a whole I actually came to appreciate the law of the lid.
