In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck’s attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature—to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.

What could John Steinbeck have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

There seemed very little characters development. The author should have added life to the people he encountered along his travels.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator spoke so slowly it was almost painful to listen to. I had to listen to this at 2x speed.

Ellis, Julia, and Dorie. Best friends since Catholic grade school, they now find themselves, in their mid-thirties, at the crossroads of life and love. Ellis, recently fired from a job she gave everything to, is rudderless and now beginning to question the choices she's made over the past decade of her life. Julia—whose caustic wit covers up her wounds—has a man who loves her and is offering her the world, but she can't hide from how deeply insecure she feels about her looks, her brains, her life.

What did you love best about Summer Rental?

I enjoyed the author's writing style and the story itself.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I wish Kathleen McInerney would have narrated the book. I love her voice and ability to make characters come to life.

What didn’t you like about Isabel Keating’s performance?

I found her voice difficult to listen to when she spoke with a southern accent; it distracted from the story. I usually grow used to a narrater's voice and am able to still enjoy the story. Listening to her voice never grew comfortable. The voices she used for the girls sounded odd through the entire book.

Married for only a week before her husband was sent to fight in World War II, Lily is anxious for his return. In honor of the soldiers' homecoming, the small Georgia town of Toccoa plans a big celebration. And Jake Russo, a handsome Italian immigrant, is responsible for the elaborate fireworks display the town commissioned. But after a chance encounter in a star-lit field, he steals Lily's heart and soul - and fulfills her in ways her socially minded, upper-class family cannot.

What did you love best about Fireworks over Toccoa?

I listen to books based on the reader first, the story second. I always enjoy the reader and was surprised that the story was good too.

    Any additional comments?

I want more books read by Kathleen McInerney.
