Ex-cop Luther Malone, lifelong member of the secretive paranormal organization known as the Arcane Society, is waiting to meet Grace Renquist. Hired as an aura-reading consultant in the quest for a murder suspect, she's got zero field experience. She's from tiny Eclipse Bay, Oregon. She's a librarian, for heaven's sake.

As for Grace, she's not expecting much either from Malone, who walks with a cane and isn't so good with a gun. Nice resumé for a bodyguard.

This was a great story. I liked the characters, their interaction and the way the author incorporated Eclipse Bay into the story. The reader was terrific. You could really tell which character was speaking. This was one of my favorites. I wish all of Krentz's stories were unabridged.

With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal.

Thomas says: "Hornfischer does it again."

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a great story and the narrator relates it in a compelling manner.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The heroism and determination of the American naval personnel who, at every turn, risked everything to ensure that the U.S. Marines on Guadalcanal would have the backing to defeat the Japanese.

What does Robertson Dean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Listening to the audiobook makes it come to life. You feel that you are with the troops as they confront the Japanese both on land and sea. It makes you appreciate even more the men who sacrificed everything to ensure that evil would not triumph in the Pacific.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

We listened to this on a road trip on our return from Colorado and were impressed. There are places where your heart goes out to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel and what they endured.

    Any additional comments?

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the history of the first significant invasion the U.S. made against Japanese held territory in World War II

Seth Quinn is finally home. It's been a long journey. But a lot has changed in St. Christopher since he's been gone - and the most intriguing change of all is the presence of Dru Whitcomb Banks.

A good story but the voices, especially the women's characters, have a tendency to blend. This would have been better with two readers. Because the main character is a man, they went with a male reader. Even some of the main male parts seem to blend. Sometimes, unless you actually have read the book, you are unsure which of them is speaking.

Regardless, I did enjoy the humor and the characters, however, you may want to read Sea Swept, Rising Tides and Inner Harbor first to get in depth knowledge of the entire story.

Leona Hewitt, disguised in men's formal evening clothes, has secretly made her way into Lord Delbridge's private museum to recover a relic stolen from her family years ago. But someone else is there in the dimly lit gallery, on the same errand: a tall, black-cloaked man whose very voice is enough to put her in a trance.

Julie says: "Amanda Quick is always worthwhile"
    "Excellent story and narrator"
    Overall

I generally like Amanda Quick stories, but these Arcane Society novels are excellent with a well-developed storyline and strong leading characters. The romance does not overshadow the main mystery. The narrator does an excellent job of portraying the varied characters and their accents.
