"High Expectations"
I was sold on the thesis of the book concerning alternate histories. Unfortunately, John Crowley lost me somewhere in the badlands of his plot. This book is an ambitious effort at corraling a wild and free, open range idea. But that mustang remains on the loose for me. When I read reviews of the book's sequels, critics warn that the author hit his high mark in Aegypt. Adios John. Your lasso flew way over my head.
"nightmares"
If you are not having enough nightmares on your own, this book will help. It is an excruciating bad dream that achieves artfulness at a price.
"Masterful and Engaging"
This whole series of audio novels about classic Japan is fascinating. The characters are substantial, and the plots worth pursuing. Invest a little time and Lian Hearn will take you to some new and interesting places. Highly recommended, especially for the history buff.
"Just for Fun"
This is a lively little murder mystery with a fun Scottish detective in the lead. If you like good company on the airplane or in the car, this novel is a bonnie choice.
"Twists and Turns"
Wow. This novel has more switchbacks that an Appalachian highway. You won't get ahead of Baldicci in figuring out this one! A good and entertaining listen from a reliable author.
"Less than promised"
Fiction about archaelogical discoveries is fascinating, but you won't find a good example here. This book is very short of archaelogical detail and loaded with characters' trivial pursuits along a thin plot line. Pass on this one. There is less here than meets the eye.
"interesting tale"
This story from ancient Rome is interesting because it is a thriller told from an army medical doctor's perspective. The story is lively, and the historical detail is clever. A nice listen!
"mundane tale"
This is a book that should never have been published. It lacks a strong story line. The narrative is trite. There is no action, no moral, and no insight. With no clear purpose, the editor should have sent the manuscript back to the author. Sad business this.
