The Formic invasion has begun. They can pretty much do as they please, including "buggerforming" of Earth. However Victor Delgado in space and Mazer Rackham on the ground have something to say about that. Characters worth rooting for (or against in some cases) along with an intriguing storyline with action makes for a very entertaining middle section of a fantastic trilogy. I am now looking forward to the next book even more than I was for this one. Another pre-order when the third book is coming up looks to be in order.
Interesting story about some of the women who were doing their part to win the war. They didn't know what exactly it was that they were doing or how it was going to help, but their actions played a vital role in bringing WWII to an end. I enjoyed listening to the lives they led while at Oak Ridge. It was sad to hear about how people were treated (or mistreated) at that time in our history, not just by the government but also by "locals" and the like. It was a story well worth listening to.
I thought Cassandra Campbell did a good job with the book.
Squeezing 4.5 billion years into a 10 hour book was quite a feat, but making it interesting to the non scientist (me) was remarkable. From beginning to end the book held my attention and fed me interesting information about the very ground upon which I walk. The science in this book was never dry and I feel I learned a few things despite my enjoying listening to this book.
A gripping story even when knowing the outcome already. Captain Phillips demonstrated with his actions what it means to be Captain. He took care of his ship and his crew, and then removed the problem. It was very interesting how he handled the pirates and his situation of being their prisoner. I also enjoyed the background of the Merchant Marines and the kind of life the MMs live. I just might see the Tom Hanks movie now.
I would recommend this selection to anyone
Really enjoyed Agincourt so I decided to give this one a try too. No regrets! Bernard Cornwell does a fantastic job with the battle scenes, really bringing them to life. It was a little hard to get behind some of the characters but all in all this was an entertaining story well worth listening to.
The performance by Jack Hawkins was very good. He brought life to the characters and flawlessly handled the various voices and accents.
A quick overview of The Battle of Britain. Well told using first hand accounts from the BBC archives. This selection gives an all too quick view into the days when Hitler was poised to achieve dominance over all of Europe but was foiled the "The Few". The length of this one is good for in between books to break things up a bit
World Without End is a long book but certainly doesn't feel like it. I had trouble turning this one off. I would extend my drives or sit parked in my car at my destination just listening for a few minutes more before I had to shut it down. That is a sure sign that I am enjoying the story.
This story takes place in Kingsbridge a couple centuries after Pillars of the Earth. Struggles to build and to tear down take place. From bridges to hospitals to power and war. Throw in a little cloak and dagger and mix it with characters you can embrace or some you want to push away. Add in the Black Death and you have more than two full days of listening pleasure.
The narration by John Lee is incredible. Keeping the characters separate and moving the story along expertly made a very good story even more enjoyable to listen to. Ken Follett and John Lee make a great team
This memoir touched on a lot of the pop culture that I grew up watching. Penny has had an interesting life and this book tells it with honesty and entertainingly. I grew up watching Laverne and Shirley but had no idea of the goings on around Penny and all of the people she knows. From her family and marriages, to all the TV people, movie people, musicians, sports figures, drugs and wild times, Penny gets her story out. Usually I prefer that authors don't read their own material, but listening to Penny's story, it was clear that this time it was the right thing to do. I enjoyed the listen
I guess once the apocalypse hits, it doesn't really matter if the survivors are from the 50s or today, the problems faced would be attacked much in the same way. This book, about survivors of nuclear war in the 1950s, follows a small town and its inhabitants through to meeting up with civilization again.
Will Patton was very good reading this one and bringing the grim circumstances to life. His tone was fitting for the style of the story and he seemed to be a natural extension of the author.
This one kept my interest and was fast paced and entertaining
This story is basically Ram Mohammad Thomas' life told through game show questions. From deserted baby to Billion rupee winner ending up in jail accused of cheating. Ram explains what his life has been and how he knew the answers to questions he wouldn't normally be able to answer.
Christopher Simpson did a very good job with all the different characters and accents. A couple times it was difficult to understand but only in a couple places, otherwise very well done.
I have not seen the movie so I cant compare it to that but I did enjoy listening to this selection and found it well worth the credit
For my first Audible Western I chose True Grit. I have not seen the movies but have heard what the story is about. I was not disappointed. This was a simple but well told story of a young 14 year old girl out to avenge her fathers death. I could imagine John Wayne as "Rooster" Cogburn with the eye patch and everything.
Donna Tartt did an outstanding job with Mattie Ross, who is after all, the one telling the story. She handled the accents well and her voicing of the men was acceptable when taking into account that the story is being told by a teenage girl.
I really enjoyed listening to this book. The story held my interest throughout and moved along well. I might just have to expand my choices to include some western style stories
