This is a rare case where the movie was better. Maybe not better than the printed book, but definitely better than the audio book. This is entirely the fault of the narrator, Kristy Swanson. She did a fine job of portraying Buffy in the original movie. Her character was upbeat and silly -- the way Buffy was intended to be before TV changed her. But as the narrator of this story, Swanson just reads with almost no inflection. Very little "acting" ability comes through. Honestly, any granny reading a bedtime story could do a better job. Swanson, herself, could have done a better job. If you can get past the boring read, the story is a good one.
There is no real plot. The main character doesn't have to do anything extraordinary to time travel; he just uses hypnosis. Then, when he is in the past, he pretty much just walks around and looks at things. I kept waiting for something -- anything -- to happen. I finally gave up at the halfway point.
Sure. He didn't bring any personality to the reading, but he didn't do anything wrong, either. I'd give him another try.
Disappointment. I love most of Stephen King's books, so I jumped on his recommendation of this book, thinking that such a talented writer would only recommend something stellar. I cannot understand what kept King's interest at all.
The only reason I shopped for this book is because Stephen King recommended it, and I'm sure hundreds of his other fans would say the same. King had to know what a huge influence he would have on Finney's sales. Shame on him for wasting our money and our time.
The Pip and Flinx series is wonderful, and I was looking forward to revisiting my favorites in audio, but Stefan Rudnicki is absolutely the wrong narrator for these books. Bloodhype is my favorite novel in the series, definitely worth five stars, but the deep, stilted narration kept me from listening past chapter one. Since Rudnicki narrates the whole series, I will not be wasting any more credits. It's too bad that Alan Dean Foster's fantastic characters and writing are ruined in the audiobooks.
