The other reviews say most of what I thought. I would just like to add that Jacob at 90 or 93 was one of the most well drawn characters in any book I have ever read. Great story that you can't bear to leave, beautifully written and read but best of all, it gave rare insight into old age. Don't miss this one.
I am in a little bit of a funk that I have finished this one. It is sort of a Forrest Gump from Sweden and is that perfect sweet spot for me, great reader, fun, well written story and light enough that you can listen to it in pieces without getting frustrated. It really made me laugh, heaven knows what passing drivers thought!
Like a couple of other reviewers, it took me a little while to get into the rhythm of both the performance and the reader but only about 10 minutes. The story is terrific - a good mystery or two and wonderfully written. I am not a giant fan of magical realism but this was so understated that I thoroughly enjoyed it. And the writer's humor is lovely. Can't wait to listen to another!
Alexander McCall Smith and Simon Prebble? Well of course it's good! A great cast of fun characters, including a wonderful dog, and a few fun twists in the story. Certainly not deep or life changing but a really fun way to spend a few hours.
Elizabeth McGovern does a lovely job with this story which never quite fullfills its promise but is very pleasant.
I liked this book and learning about Garfield. His death was all I really knew anything about so finding out how extraordinary he was was and more about the times, particularly the science of the times, was well worth the time spent . I found the writing to be repetetive, however, and in serious need of a good editor. The performance was very good.
Markham's prose is gorgeous and the her story very interesting. I thought Julie Harris did a marvelous job as reader. There is a description of a horse race that is one of my favorite audible moments! There were some slow moments and I admit that it took me a little while to get into it but that said, I highly recommend this memoir.
This may be a great story but I couldn't listen because the quality was very bad. I am actually surprised that Audible offers it in this version.
I downloaded this with trepidation as so many reviewers disliked the reader. I think she did a fine job. I agree some of her accents were overdone but she is a good, well paced reader. The story is very interesting and kept me completely engaged.
I almost never give up on books but I just couldn't do this one. Simon Vance does a good job but this is way to pointless.
The narration of this made me absolutely nuts. The reader has a good feel for the story but ruins the book by ending almost every sentence on an up inflection as in a question. The end result was that all of the characters sounded perpetually petulant so by the time things are falling apart you are so annoyed that there is no impact.
