For quite a long while you will want to strangle at least a third of the many vile and unlovable characters in this pseudo historical saga, but, dear reader, persist to enjoy the unravelling of a not bad detective novel.

Larry McMurtry's American epic, set in the late 19th century, tells the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, a drive that represents not only a daring foolhardy adventure, but a part of the American Dream for everyone involved.

You wouldn't think you could get engrossed in something so slow moving as a bunch of cows but the characters of Gus and Captain Call especially were intriguing. The extreme hardship and isolation of the cowhand/ranger/"sporting woman's" life made it so hard for both men and women to communicate in any meaningful way that one's heart just broke wanting them to escape the toungue-tied bonds that kept almost all the characters estranged from one another. No miracles occur, no epiphanies transform selfcontained introverts for the sake of true lurve. They just go on being terribly human and play their lives out and I was so sorry when it ended even after 36 hours.........

    The narration is wonderful.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

14 is one of those listens that keeps you in the supermarket carpark till the next chapter. Its a bit of a slow starter with lots of nice character development and then just keeps goings with overtones of all the best in SciFi and gothic traditions. Enjoy a rare taste of good tight writing that lets you settle right into the scene. No spoilers on this one, just sit back and enjoy a good solid listen to a fantastic narrator.

Richard Forthrast created T’Rain, a multibillion-dollar, massively multiplayer online role-playing game. But T’Rain’s success has also made it a target. Hackers have struck gold by unleashing REAMDE, a virus that encrypts all of a player’s electronic files and holds them for ransom. They have also unwittingly triggered a deadly war beyond the boundaries of the game’s virtual universe - and Richard is at ground zero.

The story line for this novel must have covered an entire wall. A cast of thousands battles it out with the forces of evil all across the globe. Listening as opposed to reading made it MUCH more gripping as there was no cheating with a quick scan of the final chapter and following the unbelievably convoluted plot involved quite a lot of sitting in the car for some time after actually arriving somewhere so as to reach a suitable place to break the narrative.
    A very very engaging listen.

Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi have always relied on the advice of the classic guide to their trade, The Principles of Private Detection. But who is the eminent author, Mr Clovis Andersen, and what if he was to come to Botswana? That seems a very unlikely possibility, and yet… When Mr Andersen visits Botswana on holiday, he is delighted and intrigued to stumble across a roadside sign that reveals the existence of the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

  • April Fool's Day

This is Bryce Courtenay's moving tribute to his son, Damon, a hemophiliac who died from medically acquired AIDS on April 1, 1991, at the age of 24. April Fool's Day is controversial, painful and heartbreaking, yet has a gentle humor. It is also life-affirming, and, above all, a testimony to the incredible regenerative strength of love: how when we confront our worst, we can become our best. This tragic yet uplifting story will change the way you think.

Never a fan of the author, the many many recommendations for this story drove me to download it.
I remain definitely not a fan of the author, unable to continue listening to such self indulgent rambling past the halfway mark. The repetition, the unspeakably banal dialogue......it was DREADFUL.
With an intelligent editor it could have been culled to about 30% and been a touching and engaging read/listen.

Pollyanna, an expert at her favorite "Glad Game" of always looking at the bright side in her numerous trials, is one of the most popular and enduring characters in all of children's literature. As Pollyanna arrives in Beldingsville to live with her strict and dutiful maiden aunt, she exclaims, "Oh, Aunt Polly, I don't know how to be glad enough that you let me come to live with you!"

If you have a hazy but pleasant memory of this book from your childhood it's probably best not to revisit it. Sad to say the burden of 45 extra years from the first experience made me want to assassinate the heroine at a mere 60minutes in. Possibly not a book for today's child as the footnotes would outstrip the narrative.
It was however very pleasing to note that Pollyanna's aunt did finally get together with the doctor - a fact that escaped me so many years ago.
It is also an inescapable fact that literary ladies did indulge in a bucket load of plot plagiarism in the good old days but hang it all, toss away the cynicism and fling yourself back to childhood and enjoy.

This is a compulsive listen. Be prepared to sit in the car unwilling to leave the narrative.
It conjures all the indecision and lack of confidence of youth along with some sharp reminders of student poverty, initial engagements with the opposite sex and the dreadful spectre of single parenthood. Hmmm, not sure why it was so enjoyable now I come to think of it.
It rings bells not tinkled in many years I guess.
Listen and revisit the past, luckily not one's own.
