Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi have always relied on the advice of the classic guide to their trade, The Principles of Private Detection. But who is the eminent author, Mr Clovis Andersen, and what if he was to come to Botswana? That seems a very unlikely possibility, and yet… When Mr Andersen visits Botswana on holiday, he is delighted and intrigued to stumble across a roadside sign that reveals the existence of the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Sliding into a new Mme Ramotswe novel is pure bliss. Good will triumph, evil will not even be too evil. Get in touch with your inner nice person and enjoy this series.
In this installment, Clovis Anderson appears in person, with the quiet application of common sense to assist the detectives of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency Botswana right wrongs and foil injustice.

At the age of four Clover chooses her own name. Aged six, she falls in love with her best friend, James. But in the adult world, things are not so simple: Clover's mother finds she's fallen out of love with her husband, and realises that James's father is interested in her. As Clover and James, and their parents, navigate their irresistible but baffling mazes of emotion, we are given a beautifully realised tale about how love can shape a life.

Forever Girl was not wrong. She dragged on and on and on. And on.
Lacking a single scintilla of the usual charm McCall Smith imparts to his characters, one could only wish the main protagonists a timely death to save us all from suffering further. I kept checking to see if this really was by THE McCall Smith, but it was true and there were occasional clues to his pen but it honestly read as if penned by aliens imitating him.

'I am with you always, even unto the end of the world . . .' Peter Leigh is a missionary called to go on the journey of a lifetime. Leaving behind his beloved wife, Bea, he boards a flight for a remote and unfamiliar land, a place where the locals are hungry for the teachings of the Bible - his 'book of strange new things'. It is a quest that will challenge Peter's beliefs, his understanding of the limits of the human body and, most of all, his love for Bea.

If you are familiar with Michel Faber's works you won't be too surprised by the ambling nature of the novel. An evangelistic pastor is recruited by a mysterious corporation to bring the gospel to an alien race on a planet they wish to colonise. It's less about a plot than an exploration of a set of possibilities and human nature in extreme circumstances. I think I enjoyed it even though the pronunciation of the "alien" speech was absolutely tortuous and made me glad the narrator wasn't with me in person to cover me in spit.
Thought provoking and given the recent extreme weather in Vanuatu possibly prescient.

Sick of meaningful novels full of angst? Fed up with soul searching by boring characters you wouldn't want to get trapped at a party with? Totally over murder mysteries of horrible goriness and sadistic violence so loaded with forensic detail you can't sleep well for days? This book is for you. A totally ironic, witty gallop through bits of England with lashings of irrelevant history thrown in as well as a not entirely fully explained murder/suicide. Best not to enquire too closely. Brilliantly narrated with tongue firmly in cheek which is where the entire novel has it. Cant wait for more of the same.

Frances had been picturing her lodgers in purely mercenary terms - as something like two great waddling shillings. But this, she thought, was what it really meant to have paying guests: this odd, unintimate proximity, this rather peeled-back moment, where the only thing between herself and a naked Mrs Barber was a few feet of kitchen and a thin scullery door. An image sprang into her head: that round flesh, crimsoning in the heat.

Made tragically boring by extreme length, introverted soul searching that took longer than real time and an array of seriously whiney and unattractive characters. I only continued to listen in the hopes of a last minute twist to the ending which, sadly, did not eventuate.

What if you had the chance to live your life again and again, until you finally got it right? During a snowstorm in England in 1910, a baby is born and dies before she can take her first breath. During a snowstorm in England in 1910, the same baby is born and lives to tell the tale. What if there were second chances? And third chances? In fact an infinite number of chances to live your life? Would you eventually be able to save the world from its own inevitable destiny? And would you even want to?

A really delightful story where the marginalised triumph. Listen for pure pleasure as the rule bound hero makes his way toward a fully rounded life, detecting a suitable partner in a scientific fashion while dodging the bullets of academic political machinations so familiar to anybody connected to a university. I cant wait for the film. Especially for the golf club dinner episode.

You wouldn't think you could get engrossed in something so slow moving as a bunch of cows but the characters of Gus and Captain Call especially were intriguing. The extreme hardship and isolation of the cowhand/ranger/"sporting woman's" life made it so hard for both men and women to communicate in any meaningful way that one's heart just broke wanting them to escape the toungue-tied bonds that kept almost all the characters estranged from one another. No miracles occur, no epiphanies transform selfcontained introverts for the sake of true lurve. They just go on being terribly human and play their lives out and I was so sorry when it ended even after 36 hours.........

    The narration is wonderful.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

14 is one of those listens that keeps you in the supermarket carpark till the next chapter. Its a bit of a slow starter with lots of nice character development and then just keeps goings with overtones of all the best in SciFi and gothic traditions. Enjoy a rare taste of good tight writing that lets you settle right into the scene. No spoilers on this one, just sit back and enjoy a good solid listen to a fantastic narrator.

The story line for this novel must have covered an entire wall. A cast of thousands battles it out with the forces of evil all across the globe. Listening as opposed to reading made it MUCH more gripping as there was no cheating with a quick scan of the final chapter and following the unbelievably convoluted plot involved quite a lot of sitting in the car for some time after actually arriving somewhere so as to reach a suitable place to break the narrative.
    A very very engaging listen.
