We love Rick riordan books and this one is no exception. They are fun, adventurous, showcase kids as heroes saving the world time and time again (my kids love that part!) and I love that riordan shares bits of mythology so that when the kids encounter it in high school or college, it will not be as intimidating.
Marsters is the perfect narrator for this series! I love that Harry gets into so much trouble all at once. The new characters make the story richer. These books are not particularly intellectually stimulating, but are perfect for when I'm in the studio working.
Marsters is perfect as the narrator. After listening to this one, I started immediately on the next installment (Fool Moon).
After reading some of the reviews, I doubted I would like it.However, I adore listening to Jim Dale and think he could read a catalog and it would be an excellent listen.
Anyway, I went into this book not expecting much. However, it was a wonderful book that a delight for all 5 senses. It was a mastery of words but without overdoing the descriptions into tedium. The beauty of the story was in its subtlety. The author didn't try to bang you over the head with what you needed to know about the characters, plot, etc...rather it is a dance in which you must be an active participant by engaging your brain.
If you prefer heart pounding action, gore, lots of sex, or easily digestible material, this book is not for you.
I think Jim Dale is my favorite narrator. He is so wonderful to listen to and the stories of Peter, Molly, George, the boys, etc are so exciting it's difficult to stop the book to do other things.
I read this book as a child and forgot most of what happened. The kids and I listened to it in the car while running errands and to and from activities. They loved it, but not in an edge of your seat kind of way. It sparked many discussions of "what if" they were left to survive on their own.
We listen to audiobooks as we drive around to all the activities, errands, etc. and this has been one of our favorites so far. It was difficult to get out of the car because we wanted to keep listening!
I was really looking forward to this book-especially because Bill Clinton reads it himself and it is a topic in which I have a huge amount of interest. However, while listening to the first chapter, I couldn't get past the fact that it sounded like another way to boost Hillary's presidential campaign because it lists all the wonderful things she has done for others. This unfortunately turned me off right from the start. The rest of the book is OK, but not as great expected.
