Forced by her father to marry a man three times her age, young Nujood Ali was sent away from her parents and beloved sisters and made to live with her husband and his family in an isolated village in rural Yemen. There she suffered daily from physical and emotional abuse by her mother-in-law and nightly at the rough hands of her spouse. Flouting his oath to wait to have sexual relations with Nujood until she was no longer a child, he took her virginity on their wedding night.

If you could sum up I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced in three words, what would they be?

    There is hope.

What did you like best about this story?

Nujood's courage and determination. I used this book as a companion to the text in an Intensive Reading course I teach and the voice helped keep the students engaged and interested. The story exposes one of the greatest middle eastern tragedies: the injustice and inequity for girls and women. Nujood's hope through the most horrifying circumstances encourages listeners to persevere.

What about Meera Simhan’s performance did you like?

You could actually hear Nujood through her voice.

The astounding story of one girl's journey from war victim to UNICEF Special Representative. As a child in a small rural village in Sierra Leone, Mariatu Kamara lived peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Rumors of rebel attacks were no more than a distant worry. But when 12-year-old Mariatu set out for a neighboring village, she never arrived. Heavily armed rebel soldiers attacked and tortured Mariatu. During this brutal act of senseless violence they cut off both of her hands.

Would you listen to The Bite of the Mango again? Why?

No, I used the audio as a companion to the text in an Intensive Reading course I teach. The students complained about the bizarre breathiness of the narration and after hearing it 5 times a day for weeks, I found myself hating the voice as well!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Bite of the Mango?

After the first chapter, the action picks up and keeps you engrossed in the story line. The surprise after Mariatu's hands are cut off and she's hospitalized is beyond shocking. It's a compelling story of survival, hope and forgiveness.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jessica Almasy’s performances?

    No.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

The book was an incredible read, but a horrible listen.
