A wonderfully insightful book about one boy's navigation towards adulthood! Listened while driving and the normally exhausting 6 hours passed very pleasantly!
Reading this book about Julia Child has been such a pleasant, gradually developing treasure! I was drawn to this book because I have long enjoyed the Julia Child that I knew from the PBS shows and was eager to learn more. This book goes back to the very essence of what helped her develop into the Julia that her fans came to love. I liked her before I read this book, and now I am utterly amazed by her! What a journey! What a spirit! What an inspiration! This book presents a Julia that I never would have guessed existed!
This narrator puts just the right touch of emotion into her reading, so that even though the book is long, it never feels tedious; and sometimes when she is quoting Julia it actually sounds like I hear a little of the timbre of the real Julia’s voice!
Most biographies I have read focus on certain portions of a person’s life, but I feel that this is the most thorough account I have ever read about one person...in one book. I truly feel as though I have known Julia!
I'm not sure if I would have liked this book as much as a hardback...but I LOVED this version with Meryl Streep narrating!!! That voice! It gives me the comforting impression of sitting down to an intimate lunch with my best friend, and having her tell me in the most humorous way possible, all about what is wrong with her marriage, for the sole purpose of making me feel better about mine. The voice inflections feel so intimate and perfect! I can't remember when I've enjoyed the narration of an audio book more!!!
I enjoyed the movie of the same name, but I wanted more information, so I got this book. This book was worth the time it took to listen to, but only because of the valuable insights it offers about the confusing relationship of the United States with Afghanistan.
The problem is,the way the novel tells that information is no more interesting than a history book!
I expected dialogue between players, but instead the story is told completely as a third person narrative....Charlie went there...Charlie called him...etc. etc. etc.The only thing that got me through this tedious book was the narrator tried his best to add interest.
However, I rated the information in the book 5 stars (that is the only reason I stuck with it to the end), the way it was written rated 3 stars, the narrator I rated 4 stars...hence the 3 star attempt at an average I have listed above.
Loved everything about this book! the Locations, characters, and story, with a bit of African history thrown in!
I found that the parts of the story that take place in Italy are very interesting, and these are the parts where the narrator EXCELS. However, all of the rest of the multiple directions the story takes are barely tolerable, and then after all of that, the ending is not very satisfying. Guess I had my hopes up too high from all of the GREAT reviews I read.
I loved the whole package here!
The magnetic voice and performance drew me in; and the story, even though I remember bits from school years ago, is written so interestingly that I am compelled to keep listening & listening!
This is another of those rare audio books that I couldn't wait to listen to every day & was actually a little sad when I reached the end.
No, as much as I loved it, I think reading a book twice is enough for me.
It made me cry.
Can't remember liking the book this much when I read it first in high school! Loved Dylan Baker's performance!
The material this program teaches, is in a easy to learn, effective format. However the phrases being taught are phrases I rarely (if ever) use in English & doubt that I will EVER use in Spanish. (Do you brush your teeth after or before you comb your hair every morning?)I don't remember ANY NORMAL conversations in the whole book! But I DO know how to say "He takes off all his clothes every night at 11:00." That should come in real handy in a restaurant! Why can't they teach the same techniques using conversations that are actually useful?
