Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have been trying to listen to this book, but it has been like pulling teeth. I can't get into the book, other than my wish to continue the series after my enjoyment of the first 3 in the series.

What didn’t you like about Raymond Todd’s performance?

Mr Todd's performance is not my favorite. He reads quickly, with little inflection other than the rhythmic same set of tones that he uses through the whole reading, and he does nothing to differentiate for the voices. If you like that sort of thing, then maybe this is the reader for you.

Was Thuvia, Maid of Mars worth the listening time?

I must say that I will never again go for the cheaper and faster book, when there are multiple narrator options.

    Any additional comments?

Hopefully, if the other narrator for this book is better, I will enjoy the story.

Bingtown is a hub of exotic trade and home to a merchant nobility famed for its liveships---rare vessels carved from wizardwood, which ripens magically into sentient awareness. The fortunes of one of Bingtown's oldest families rest on the newly awakened liveship Vivacia. For Althea Vestrit, the ship is her rightful legacy unjustly denied her---a legacy she will risk anything to reclaim.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance of this book was dry. Anne's attempts at drama just sound forcibly smokey. I also had to speed up the narration to 1.5 to keep from outright falling asleep.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The book in general is very depressing! You get a glimmer of hope just before you reach the 33rd HOUR into the book. Everyone makes poor decisions and there is very little redemption. This is not entertainment. The concept of the book is great and I can see how some interesting things might happen in the rest of the series, but I just don't think I can do it. Especially since it is the same narrator. I do not need to waste a credit for 35 hours of wanting to bang my head into a wall. I absolutely hate to give up on a series, but this book has successfully turned me off. The only thing I can say is that the author does a great job and portraying characters with both an internal and external perspective. You come to love certain characters when it is coming from their perspective and you just want to face-palm yourself when you see how they are from another character's eyes. If the characters had any real feeling of depth, I would think more highly of this book.
