Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky. In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war. Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages - not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color.

What was most disappointing about Laini Taylor’s story?

Despite reading the plot synopsis and reviews, I somehow missed the fact that this is a young adult fantasy/romance. If you love reading long-winded descriptions of the chiseled face and bulging muscles of a drop-dead gorgeous male angel, you'll enjoy this book. I didn't. Add to that the story drags for the second half, and I can't believe the consistently good reviews that it is getting. On top of that, I was frustrated that the book didn't tell a complete story - this book stops in the middle with the words

The killings on Isle Royale have left Anna drained and haunted, her memories of her time with the wolf study group forever marred by the carnage on the island. Diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, she is on administrative leave, per her superintendent's urging. Anna wonders if the leave might not be permanent, either by her own choice or that of the National Park Service.

    Story

My wife and I listened to this and did not enjoy it at all. The characters are hollow, the plot is formulaic and the story is completely implausible. For example, several murders occur at the beginning of the book but then aren't mentioned, explained or investigated until near the end of the book...the characters seem to pretend the never happened. All-in-all, this is a book I wish I had skipped.
