Today is Leonard Peacock's birthday. It is also the day he hides a gun in his backpack. Because today is the day he will kill his former best friend, and then himself, with his grandfather's P-38 pistol. But first he must say good-bye to the four people who matter most to him: his Humphrey Bogart - obsessed next-door neighbor, Walt; his classmate Baback, a violin virtuoso; Lauren, the Christian homeschooler he has a crush on; and Herr Silverman, who teaches the high school's class on the Holocaust.

i don't re-listen to any books, as a rule. but i might do just that at some point.
    it was just captivating.

What does Noah Galvin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

he MADE the listen! one of the best narrations i've heard.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    absolutely!

    Any additional comments?

In defense of her honor, innocent Leda Etoile has burned all her bridges and taken refuge in her tiny attic room in a shabby boarding house in London. But her last safe haven is invaded when she wakes to find a man hidden in the dark - a man with golden hair and the face of a fallen angel, who moves in the night like a shadow. Will he be her savior, or her ruin? Samuel Gerard draws her inexorably into the richest circles of aristocratic England. But even as Leda falls in love with a man she can never have, she must keep his secrets.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone who enjoyed FLOWERS FROM THE STORM.

Would you ever listen to anything by Laura Kinsale again?

no. I purchased this book, not realizing that it was the same author of FLOWERS FROM THE STORM. and about 2 hours through, I can tell it's going to be the same never-ending sex between a naïve, pure little maiden and the big misunderstood man.

Have you listened to any of Nicholas Boulton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

yes...FLOWERS FROM THE STORM. good reader. plays the sexy guy well.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Shadow and the Star?

I have not even gotten to the long drawn-out sex sessions....but I would cut most of that out and leave some of it to the imagination. it gets boring.

    Any additional comments?

both books, I believe, have good story lines....if only, and I hate to keep harping on this...there was not the 2 hours bedroom sessions. enough already!
I'm returning this book and paying closer attention to the author when I choose a book.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

    teenagers

What was most disappointing about Colleen Hoover’s story?

i'm not finished with it yet but i doubt i will. i'm well into the first half and so far it's just teenage angst. the characters are way to self-aware for their age. it just gets annoying after a while. i hope something interesting happens soon or i will definitely stop listening.

Which character – as performed by Angela Goethals – was your favorite?

if i had to choose it would be Sky, the main character. but she's annoying as well.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    definitely disappointment

    Any additional comments?

    the characters are not realistic.
