On the mend after getting run out of Chicago, professional cardsharp Bill Maynard is hungry for some action...but not nearly as hungry as Joyce Rogers, the tantalizing wife of Bill's latest mark. Together they hatch an ingenious scheme to get rid of her husband. But in life as in poker, the other player sometimes has an ace up his sleeve.

Tried and true, Lawrence Block delivers one of his basic hard boiled stories that entertains and keeps one listening.

From David Baldacci - the modern master of the thriller and number-one worldwide best-selling novelist - comes a new hero: a lone Army Special Agent taking on the toughest crimes facing the nation. John Puller is a combat veteran and the best military investigator in the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigative Division. His father was an Army fighting legend, and his brother is serving a life sentence for treason in a federal military prison. Puller has an indomitable spirit and an unstoppable drive to find the truth.

Steven L. Otis says: "There will be more of Puller ...."
"Baldacci is copying Lee Child !!"

What would have made Zero Day better?

Baldacci's protagonist is exactly like a softer Reacher. He somehow knows the time of day all the time, armed services, very tall and very strong, walks into small town and saves the day.

To make matters worse, the plot must have been written by a computer. Boy goes to small town, meets girl (cop), investigates strange murders, digs deeper, more murders, some heroics thrown in for laughs, discovers an absolutely unrealistic situation and then disarms a nuclear weapon with his girlfriend the cop.

I stopped listening. What a waste of my time.

I have read lots of baldacci. I always enjoyed them. Good characters, good plots. He has fallen off a cliff.
