In the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, New York, in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane arrives to educate the children of the region. A flawless combination of narration and writing. Anthony Heald brings out the meter, rhythm and nuance of this short but perfect text. Washington Irving would have been pleased.

  • Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

All human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde, alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil. Published as a “shilling shocker”, Robert Louis Stevenson’s dark psychological fantasy gave birth to the idea of the split personality. The story of respectable Dr Jekyll’s strange association with a damnable young man Edward Hyde; the hunt through fog-bound London for a killer; and the final revelation of Hyde’s true identity is a chilling exploration of humanity’s capacity for evil.

This looks to be a re-release of an older cassette tape I once had from Penguin Classics. It was the unabridged version and so is this - incorrectly identified here, as abridged. I have listened to two other versions of the story and this one narrated by Jonathan Hyde is by far the best.

A greedy, philandering Baptist minister, Elmer Gantry turns to evangelism and becomes the leader of a large Methodist congregation. Often exposed as a fraud, he is never fully discredited. Elmer Gantry is considered a landmark American novel and one of the most penetrating studies of hypocrisy in modern literature. It portrays the evangelistic activity that was common in 1920s America as well as attitudes toward it.

I have previously enjoyed Anthony Heald reading The House of the Seven Gables, but this reading of Elmer Gantry is a work of art in itself. Both the reading and the writing are a "revelation".
