In World War II-era California, Homer Macauley and his mother, sister, and three brothers live out struggles and dreams that reflect those of America’s second-generation immigrants. Homer, determined to become one of the fastest telegraph messengers in the West, finds himself caught between reality and illusion as delivering his messages of wartime brings him face-to-face with human emotion at its most naked and raw.

This was such a wonderful book. Having seen the movie years ago I didn't know what to expect. The movie kept to the book very closely and even though I saw the movie first it didn't ruin the audio presentation. It is a gentle story of a family living in a small town in California during WW2. The writing captured the flavor of the era amazingly well.
It was a little hard to get used to Meg Ryan as narrator but after a while I got used to her style. I am so glad I decided to select this book .Its a Classic.

The year is 1933. Maisie Dobbs is contacted by an Indian gentleman who has come to England in the hopes of finding out who killed his sister two months ago. Scotland Yard failed to make any arrest in the case, and there is reason to believe they failed to conduct a thorough investigation. The case becomes even more challenging when another Indian woman is murdered just hours before a scheduled interview. Meanwhile, unfinished business from a previous case becomes a distraction, as does a new development in Maisie's personal life.

Another winner for Jacqueline Winspear. She is one of the best mystery writers around. I always enjoy the plots which are unpredictable, great character development and enough details to keep it interesting. Having been to London gives me added pleasure as I recognize many of the locations and descriptions. Everyone I know reads and loves Maisie Dobbs.
Orlagh Cassidy is the perfect narrator and her accent is polished and genuine. I guess I will have to wait a year for the next installment in the life of Maisie Dobbs.

A cerebral hemorrhage leaves Tony comatose in a hospital ICU. He 'awakens' to find himself in a surreal world, a 'living' landscape that mirrors dimensions of his earthly life, from the beautiful to the corrupt.

I loved "The Shack" but this book by Paul Young this book is very different . It has an unexpected plot device but after you see where he is going with it, it works. There are some strange dialogue sequences and a little too much switching of narration of the various characters but I did like the premise of the story and the ending. The narrator was good.

Some might wonder how Martha could have clung to hope at all. In 1948, on the day of the funeral of her adored older brother, Gaston, a quick victim of the great polio epidemic, Martha was struck with the same dreaded disease. After a year in polio hospitals, she was sent back to her home in the village of Lattimore in the cotton-growing hills of western North Carolina. She was completely paralyzed, with only her head protruding from an 800-pound yellow metal cylinder that breathed for her.

Hart takes us back to the magical time when she and Marty rubbed elbows with the rich and famous; pinched pennies to eat at the Automat; experienced nightlife at La Martinique; and danced away their weekends with dashing midshipmen. Between being dazzled by Judy Garland's honeymoon visit to Tiffany, celebrating VJ Day in Times Square, and mingling with Caf society, she fell in love, learned unforgettable lessons, and made important decisions that would change her future.

What a delightful book! A wonderful peek back into New York City at the close of WW2.A must for those of us not born before the war. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the inside look into the way Tiffany ran its exclusive store.
It is so well written that it took you right into the atmosphere of the department stores, Schraft's, and the Automat where the girls ate their lunch making you feel you were there too.
The narrator was excellent .Just the right tone for the youthful Marjorie a small town girl from Iowa, as she worked that last summer of the War in the bustling city.

Chasing Fireflies was sometimes heart wrenching but very good listen.

These classic books, long out of print, are such a welcome addition to Audible . Author D.E. Stevenson is often compared to Jane Austin and the Brontes. I was so pleased to find that Audible had acquired some of them on audio. I have been a long time fan of Stevenson I have almost every book she has written and these vintage stories from England only improve with listening.
D.E. Stevenson has over 50 books to her credit which were translated into many languages, transcribe into braille then made into "Talking books" The most famous books were the "Mrs Tim Christie" series that came out during WW2. I can only hope that someone will record these and Audible will acquire the rights to offer them here in the U.S.
.The only ones I did not like as much were the previously unpublished works " The Fair Miss Fortune" and" Peter West". These were her first novels and she did not feel they were up to her standards and did not allow them to be published while she was alive.
Anyone who likes Pastoral Settings in England and Scotland during the middle of last century will love these books.

I really like the "Maisie Dobbs" books . The mysteries are quite different... not some formula plot you can figure out on page 5. All of the books are worth listening to ,however its better to start at book 1 as the characters evolve .I started at book 4 found I liked to series so I went back to the first one and began again. I liked the narrator too... she was relaxing to listen to as she did not read to fast. Looking forward to this years addition to the series.Check out Maisie Dobbs for yourself.

Here is another example of consistently good writing from a GREAT author. The Story is very well constructed, the character development outstanding and the descriptions of Keith's journey to find the "lost ship" very detailed and believable. This is the story of a "simple man" with meager means who did an extra ordinary thing to fulfill to the letter his duty as a trustee for his young niece upon the untimely death of her parents.
Of course the narration is top notch with Frank Muller at the helm.
    Don"t miss this classic!

Indoors are servants, meals, and furniture. There, too, is The Man of Wrath, her upright Teutonic husband, inspiring in Elizabeth a mixture of irritation, affection, and irreverence. But outside she can escape domestic routine, read favorite books, play with her three babies and garden to her heart's content. Through Elizabeth's eyes we watch the seasons, from May's "oasis of bird-cherries and greenery" to the time when "snow carpets her Pomeranian wilderness".

The narration is fine its the story that fails to capture my attention. Nadia May narrated "The Childrens Hour" by Marcia Willett and it it excellent.I will still pay attention to anything narrated by Nadia May but hesitate about any more of Von Armins books.
