I thought the movie was good but the book is better. I don't know how I can say that about a story that's longer than "War and Peace". But the time is used for masterful character development and an historical viewpoint that's often lost when one is on the losing side.
Linda Stephens is a superb narrator and doesn't lose her touch anywhere along the route.
I'm glad I listened to other reviewers and downloaded this masterpiece.

I was suspicious of all these five star reviews, but bought the book anyhow. Everyone was correct. This is a top notch story of the genre, made even better because of minimal use of square rigging terminology. The tension is not between the protagonist and the enemy, but among the protagonist, captain, crew, and the system. Much more interesting and realistic. The reader is a man of many voices and is one of my favorites. I can see more coming.

I don't understand it! How can a 43 hour book keep my attention throughout? One reason is the "Above Excellent" rating I would give to the reader. Without him, the book would have been much less listenable. If the great American novel could be defined, this book would be it.
If you get a chance to see the movie - please don't!
It's very badly done and has only a nodding acquaintance with this book.

The story moved along, was believable and the local color was nice.
It's also good to see that race relations in Southern Africa are so improved at least as far as the police are concerned.
The use of Shakespeare phrases was a nice touch.
The description of orgasms could have been left out since it added nothing to the story.
Maybe the obligatory sex was added to remind us this is a "modern" book.

This was a long story and I was sorry when it ended. It was very well written and even though there was a lot of detail, the story moved along. The reader was absolutely superb and of course that contributed to my enjoyment of the book.
