This book was not written by Michael Crichton - it couldn't have been. I'll believe he did the outline of this story before he died, but he didn't write the details. It was poorly plotted, the dialog was terrible, the pacing was all off, and it was not "believable". And to make it worse, the narrator was horrible. He didn't know how to read a story. He was reading like he was doing marketing ads. The tensing was all wrong. Michael Crichton writes exciting, well written books. Find one of the older ones and read it – don’t waste your money or points on this one..
I've always enjoyed Tad Williams books. Shadowmarch was very interesting, with good character development. The narrator was a perfect fit for this book - he is a good storyteller and kept my interest through the whole book. I will definitely look for other books he reads. I like the whole thing so much, I bought the same book for my Kindle so that I could read it again!
I also don't usually write reviews, but I felt I had to say something about this book. The description of this book is very misleading. I thought this was going to be a murder mystery, but it's not. If you want a book that has some pretty strange ideas about God, the Trinity, etc - you might like this book. If you, too, are looking for a good "Who Done It" - you will not want to get this book. It is so bad, I can't even finish listening to it.
This is the first book I've ever reviewed here. Don't waste your money, or book credits, on this book. I am a long time fan of horror stories – Stephen King, Clive Barker, Robert Bloch, Ramsey Campbell – but I stopped listening to this horrible book when there was only 2 hours left. The story is so ridiculous it isn’t even enjoyable. Right, a woman who had enough meat carved out of her buttocks and thighs to feed a dozen plus people is able to walk into the room and eat her own flesh. I don’t think so. With that much muscle mass gone, she wouldn’t be able to walk, much less come out of the shock itself. It isn’t even funny. Much less believable. The author has to make a story believable, even if it is “fantasy”, or its just meaningless gore. This was the point at which I deleted this book out of my Audible Manager. I will say that some of the short stories within the novel were interesting. I purchased by book based on the free excerpt – Exodus. That story was interesting. Most of the rest of the stories were poorly written and didn’t hang together well as short stories.
