I read Weber's Oath of Swords some years ago and enjoyed it greatly. I found it to be a solid fantasy world combined with engaging characters and fun combat. Having just gotten into audio books recently, I saw the title here and decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed in the slightest. Nick Sullivan does a fantastic job bringing the characters to life and truly captures the listener, bringing a new dimension to the story that I couldn't have imagined. Definitely worth getting.
This was a fun ride and I can definitely see the appeal for the YA audience. There were enough tie ins to the Cinderella story while still being spun into something different within a new environment as to be fun and refreshing. My only complaint would be that the story did not feel particularly polished, feeling repetitive and stiff at times. Still, it was overall an excellent listen and I definitely recommend fairytale fans give it a try!
I wasn't entirely sure what I was getting into when I started this. The beginning was a bit slow and it took me that time to get into the narrators accent but it was definitely worth sticking with. This is the sort of book that slips it's claws into you without you realizing and suddenly you find yourself listening to it at every opportunity.
I've always enjoyed the Dirk Pitt novels, so when I was looking for a change of pace (I'm normally a fantasy/sci-fi girl) and saw this book up in a BOGO sale I decided to take a chance on it. The reviews seemed favorable and I figured a mash up between a Dirk Pittesque hero with some sci-fi goodness would be a grand combination. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed. The repetitive descriptive phrases alone almost made me give up the fight to get through this. I thought the characterizations to be a bit thin and found myself rooting for the monsters more then the heroes.
