    Using a travel guide format, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee acts as tour guide extraordinaire, describing and critiquing every aspect of this territory she knows so well: its people (young and old, male and female), familiar phrases ("purl this, darn that"), strange beliefs, currency (skein trading), etiquette, holidays (any sale day at the local yarn shop), and customs. She notes important dates in knitting history and celebrates unsung knitting heroes.

    Would you listen to Stephanie Pearl-McPhee Casts Off again? Why?

    I had a hard time listening to Stephanie read her own books. Her timing is off and it comes across as stunted.


    What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Did Stephanie Pearl-McPhee do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    Eh ... it's not really character driven. But it is a funny look at us crafty folks and our obsession with two sticks and some pretty string.

    What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    I loved listening to it - very different from reading. She really weaves a spell with her voice. I was unsure she could carry off the "Claire" in my head - but now I can't imagine someone else trying to read them aloud.

    This final play from the pen of Oscar Wilde is a stylish send-up of Victorian courtship and manners, complete with assumed names, mistaken lovers, and a lost handbag. Jack and Algernon are best friends, both wooing ladies who think their names are Ernest, "that name which inspires absolute confidence." Wilde's effervescent wit, scathing social satire, and high farce make this one of the most cherished plays in the English language.

    I would listen to this performance again. I love Oscar Wilde and the verbal banter had me laughing out loud.


    Who was your favorite character and why?

    James Marsters does an excellent job with pace and timing in this play. Who else could be Ernest?
